Hello everyone,
To all my friends, you already know who I am. To those of you who don’t, let me introduce myself. I am 26 year-old university graduate with a degree in architecture. I’ve been working in that field for over 2 years now. I am an easy-going, fun-loving kind of person and I enjoy the company of others. I like to make people smile and will always try to uplift those around me. Over the past few months, I have been concentrating more and more on trying to find my true happiness . I came to realize that I can’t be truly happy without helping those around me; I have a desire and passion to help others. But I live in a very privileged place. If I am unhappy, I can change my perspective and be grateful for what I have. No matter how bad of a day I might be having, all of my basic needs are always met. This is true for so many of us, which means that we have so much more than the majority of the population of our beautiful planet.
On April of 2015, Nepal was rocked by a devastating earthquake that completely destroyed their beautiful city of Kathmandu and the surrounding mountain villages. Shortly after, while rescuers were working tirelessly to help save lives and rebuild the city, they were struck by another devastating earthquake. Now, more than ever, the people of Nepal and Kathmandu need the aid of anyone willing to help. Over half a million structures were leveled and they don’t have the man-power or infrastructure to rebuild at a fast enough pace. Children have gone too long without proper school environments, and families have been without proper living accommodations. Yet, the people of Kathmandu are still grateful, happy and accepting. Even among all the pain, suffering and tragedy, they are still content with what they have; grateful to be alive, no matter how difficult their lives may be. I am seeking to help these people who are truly in need; who need a few special moments of happiness of seeing their schools rebuilt, their villages put back together; of smiling and laughing with a silly, loving guy from the other side of the planet.
Unfortunately, money is a great deciding factor in how much help is given, how many volunteers are willing to help, how many supplies are available. As much as I would like to give freely from the goodness in my heart, this experience will not come cheaply. And so I turn to you. My family, friends, colleagues and even complete strangers. Please help me to make a difference. I could easily bear the cost of this experience. It wouldn’t bankrupt me, it wouldn’t hamper my ability to afford the things I need and have grown accustomed to having in my life. But I would still be very grateful and thankful for any help that is willingly given. The money that I am trying to raise will go mainly to two things. Firstly, to my plane ticket. I am looking to find the cheapest flight possible, however trips to Nepal at this time of year range between $2 500 and upwards of $5 000. The second thing, is for two meals a day as well as living accommodations. While in Nepal, I will be living with a local family. They are being gracious enough to accept me into their small home and to feed me twice a day; to give me a roof over my head and to keep me comfortable. This is no small kindness, to accept a complete stranger into one’s home and it is something that I am very grateful for. Meals and accommodations for the month of July come out to roughly $1500 Canadian. So I am looking at about $4 000-$5 000 between the flights and accommodations, as well as a small fee for supplies. I by no means need to recoup the full amount and will be thrilled with any help that is given.
So please, think real hard. If you have just a little bit to share, do so. You will be making a difference in my life, but also, and more importantly so, in the lives of countless kind, loving and hopeful Nepali people. No amount is too small. If you don’t feel like you can make a monetary contribution, help me to spread my campaign. Pass this along to anyone you know, who might be able to help. And if you are compelled to, if you are a like-minded person, considering giving back in a more meaningful way, consider volunteering with Build Abroad. Check out their website and see if there is a cause that speaks to you. Everyone in this world is capable of great things, and there is no greater deed or accomplishment than helping others, in passing along your inner happiness to others so that they can, in turn, pass it along again and again.
To every person who donates, or to those who took the time to read this, I am forever grateful. You have filled me with even more happiness: happiness that I can now spread across the world as I commence my journey. You are all a part of what is to come. You are all helping to make a difference. That is no small feat. Be proud in yourselves, be optimistic that the people of Nepal will bounce back, and above all be happy and share that happiness with all those around you.
Thank you and Namaste,
Saul Strauss
