Birchot HaShachar: Bringing the Morning Blessings to Life
For many Jews, the words of our daily liturgy are ancient, beautiful—and often difficult to access. We may know the prayers, attend services, or even recite the Hebrew, yet still struggle to feel what the words are asking us to experience. The Birchot HaShachar, the Morning Blessings, offer a particularly powerful opportunity: they invite us to begin every day by noticing the ordinary miracles of being alive. Yet for many people, these blessings remain words on a page rather than a living daily practice.
For the past year and a half, I have been writing new melodies for these prayers and bringing them into Jewish communities through services, retreats, teaching, and artist residencies. These songs have not developed in isolation in a recording studio—they have been workshopped in community. I have watched people learn the melodies, sing them back, and connect with familiar words in new ways. I have seen firsthand that the music works.
That experience led to Birchot HaShachar (Morning Blessings), also known as Nissim B'chol Yom (Miracles Every Day). The project will transform these melodies into a professionally produced album and a collection of musical, visual, and educational resources that can travel far beyond the communities where they were first developed.
The opportunity is there; the barrier is access. Right now, these melodies primarily live wherever I am physically present to teach and lead them. Professional recordings, videos, lead sheets, and digital distribution will allow a melody first sung in one room to reach a congregation across the country—or an individual beginning the morning alone at home.
My prayer for this project is twofold: that these melodies become part of the musical vocabulary of Jewish communities throughout North America and beyond, and that they inspire individuals to develop their own personal morning practice. Imagine someone beginning the day not by reaching immediately for a phone, but by singing a blessing and taking a moment to recognize the miracle of waking up, opening their eyes, standing on their feet, and beginning again.
This is where supporters become essential to the story.
The music has been written. The melodies have been tested and refined in real communities. Now we need to give them wings.
Support for Birchot HaShachar will fund professional musicians, studio recording, mixing and mastering, lead sheets, a companion video series, marketing, and distribution, including a limited CD and vinyl pressing. Supporters will help transform music that is already creating meaningful moments in individual communities into a lasting Jewish cultural resource available to thousands of people.
In return, supporters are not simply helping fund another album. They become partners in creating a new body of contemporary Jewish music and helping renew an ancient spiritual practice for a new generation. They will be invited into the creative journey through recordings, videos, project updates, and opportunities to experience and share the music as it comes to life.
This will be my eleventh original release and nineteenth album as a producer, but the measure of success for Birchot HaShachar will not simply be how many albums are streamed or sold. Success will be hearing these melodies sung in communities I have never visited and knowing that somewhere, someone is beginning their morning with a little more gratitude, awareness, and wonder.
The prayers are thousands of years old. The opportunity is to help people hear them—and live them—anew.
