Sailability hasn't added a story.
We Provide the opportunity for anyone with a disability to learn to sail or at least have a water based experience. We are volunteer led, have no paid staff but do have very experienced and qualified instructors
To date, 1,014 people with a disability have joined one or more of our programs. Some come back time and time again. Those who have joined us include other charities, schools and NGO’s. Some sailors progress so well they have joined one of our 2 racing teams (Physical or Intellectual disability)
Our Motto is: “Learning to sail should be available to everyone”
We are Accredited members of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association in the UK) , are members of ‘Sailability World’ in Australia and the HK Paralympic Organisation here in Hong Kong however, the Government nor local Sailing Federation do not provide financial support
Our racing teams have won international medals in Korea and Australia - as well as winning ‘Open’ regattas and races here in Hong Kong
Who Can Sail With Us?
The intellectually challenged e.g. Downs, Austistic, Non Verbal & Delayed Development. Some now sail on their own and have become proficient sailors – much to the surprise (and pride) of their parents and guardians. Our programs improve self confidence, self esteem and independence as well as providing a skill with which they can compete with able-bodied sailors
Those with physical disabilities of all kinds including amputees, polio and the visually impaired
Criteria – Provided they live in Hong Kong and have a disability, we are open to all
All have a choice. A one-off sail, regular sailing for fun or formal sailing lessons and development. All are welcome
It has always been our belief that sailing provides the opportunity for those with a disability to compete in the same sport, at the same time and in the same race as the more able-bodied.
During September 2014 at the ABC Regatta, 2 sailors with a physical disability came 2nd & 4th overall! (37 competing Boats)
In November 2014 at the HHYC 24 Hour Charity Race, 4 sailors finished 3rd & 12th overall (41 competing boats)
In November 2015 at the HHYC 24 Hour Charity Race, 4 sailors finished 1st & 9th overall (39 competing boats)
We are here this weekend to try and repeat the success we had in 2015. Please come along and support us !!
The 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race, hosted by Hebe Haven Yacht Club is back. The annual event is now in 15th year, having raised over HK$10 million for its beneficiaries since its inception.
A great community event which brings sailors of all ages, cultures and levels together to help those less fortunate than themselves.
A unique feature of the event is that many of the beneficiaries take part alongside teams from sailing clubs, schools, community groups, indeed anyone who is interested!
