Raul was an active 35-year-old teacher of Biology and Chemistry when he was struck with dreaded kidney disease.  He had bronchitis that wouldn’t heal. After trying three different types of antibiotics with no improvement, doctors ran additional bloodwork and discovered that his kidneys weren’t functioning properly. It turns out the issue had been present since childhood—he was frequently sick with fevers, flus, and viruses—but it was only formally diagnosed later in life.

He has now been on dialysis for nine years, traveling over two hours back and forth to Santiago, three times a week. 

In 2019, his family raised $4000 to help with his imminent kidney transplant. The Dominican Starfish Foundation raised an additional $5,000 to help when we heard about his situation.  

Sadly, when COVID-19 shut down the world, his surgery was canceled.  During this time, his father contracted heart disease and was no longer able to be a donor.  

For the past six years, his life has been hanging in the balance, and with his kidneys failing, his life has become very uncertain.  

With a kidney transplant being the only option, Raul and his wife Alise have explored every option, using all the funds collected in testing other potential donors, and expensive travel and medication.  

Of the money collected in 2019, only $300 is left, with every penny spent on hope for the future.  

The miracle is happening!  Finally, his 22-year-old nephew, Wilson,  has offered to donate his kidney and has been found a suitable match.  

Surgery has been scheduled for October 10.  

We are overjoyed at this news and want to help the family with their medical expenses to make this surgery financially possible for them.
