RACCOLTA PER UN MEZZO DI TRASPORTO PER LA PROTEZIONE DELLE TARTARUGHE MARINE
Capo Verde è il terzo posto al mondo più importante per la deposizione delle uova della tartaruga marina Comune (Caretta caretta). Nonostante questo, la sottopopolazione che nidifica nelle isole dell’arcipelago è segnalata fra le undici popolazioni di tartarughe marine più in pericolo nel mondo. Sfortunatamente la maggior causa del loro declino è la continua uccisione delle femmine per la loro carne.
Fin dalla sua istituzione nel 2015, la storia di Project Biodiversity è stata caratterizzata da forza, resistenza e determinazione. Ogni stagione più di cinquanta persone tra membri dello staff e volontari internazionali dedicano il loro tempo per proteggere le tartarughe dai cacciatori pattugliando le spiagge tutte le notti.
Con più di 19 km di spiaggia da controllare, lo staff dipende in gran parte da un affidabile mezzo di trasporto per poter effettuare in modo adeguato il proprio lavoro.
Nelle ultime due stagioni numerosi ostacoli- includendo ingranaggi difettosi e motori perennemente surriscaldati- hanno reso più difficile avere un trasporto sicuro.
Questo è il motivo per cui quest’anno sogniamo in grande! Vorremmo raccogliere 14000 euro -quota sufficiente per acquistare un pick-up affidabile e in buone condizioni- e per questo abbiamo bisogno del tuo aiuto.

Cosa significa per noi avere un pick-up?
Un pick-up in buone condizioni ha diverse funzioni tutte ugualmente importanti:
Per il nostro team che pattuglia le spiagge significa sapere che in caso d’emergenza qualcuno sarà in grado di raggiungerli facilmente e velocemente.
Per i coordinatori dell’accampamento significa un modo affidabile per raggiungere le persone nelle spiagge in caso di chiamate per tartarughe catturate o minacce dirette da parte di cacciatori
Per i responsabili del progetto significa avere un mezzo di trasporto con il quale portare i volontari in spiaggia all’inizio della pattuglia e al suo termine in accampamento, luoghi che spesso sono lontani gli uni dagli altri.
Per tutti i componenti del team vuole dire avere un mezzo più efficace ed effettivo per proteggere le tartarughe.
Cosa succede se raggiungiamo il nostro obbiettivo?
Le donazioni che riceveremo servono in primo luogo per acquistare una macchina nuova per il progetto, la quale ci permetterà di migliorare le pattuglie, proteggere più spiagge e assicurare risposte più veloci in caso d’emergenza.
Una volta raggiunto il nostro obiettivo useremo le donazioni rimanenti sempre per la protezione delle tartarughe, acquistando nuove attrezzature, materiale didattico e per sostenere campagne di sensibilizzazione

Qualche informazione sulla conservazione delle tartarughe marine in Sal- Se ancora non ne hai…!
L’isola di Sal è la seconda isola più importante per la nidificazione delle tartarughe marine dopo Boa Vista. Nel 2016 Project Biodiversity ha registrato un record nel numero di nidi, 4.120, che supera quello del 2012 di 2.606. Nonostante questi buoni numeri, la popolazione di tartarughe è caratterizzata da un alto tasso di mortalità a causa delle attività umane. Le minacce maggiori sono la caccia delle femmine per carne e uova, la perdita di habitat, l’inquinamento luminoso e la produzione di plastica. Solo nel 2016 si è riscontrata una diminuzione della popolazione del 18% causata dalla caccia, e sono state contate più di 200 tartarughe uccise.
Project Biodiversity è l’unica organizzazione nonprofit che lavora in Sal per la conservazione delle tartarughe marine. Durante la stagione di deposizione, da Giugno a Ottobre, istituiamo un accampamento e accogliamo volontari internazionali e locali capoverdiani che ci aiutano pattugliando ogni notte le più importanti spiagge dove le tartarughe depongono le uova. Facendo questo scoraggiamo la caccia e raccogliamo anche dati biometrici che ci permettono di raccogliere maggiori informazioni sullo stato di salute della popolazione di tartarughe. Inoltre spostiamo i nidi che si trovano in posizioni non idonee in una incubatrice, dove li monitoriamo fino a quando non si schiudono le uova. Nel 2016 abbiamo liberato piú di 51.800 piccole tartarughine in mare!
