The Canadian campaign to criminalise ecocide (mass damage and destruction of nature) has been active since 2020. From a concept barely known and spoken of, Stop Ecocide Canada has brought visibility and awareness to this essential missing piece of legislation and most importantly, the need to make it a crime.

Since we started, we met with parliamentarians (Liberal, Greens, NDP, Conservative, Bloc Québécois), senators and government offices across the country. We started an open letter to mobilise young people, we opened a local chapter in Toronto, and received media coverage in news outlets such as APTN, The Tyee, Franco Presse and the National Observer. We also established partnerships with prominent Canadian and Indigenous leaders, lawyers, activists and youth, we co-hosted webinars and produced podcast episodes.

Criminalising ecocide changes the ground rules by which our economy operates. It makes serious harm to nature legally and morally unacceptable, preventing finance from flowing to practices that destroy ecosystems. It stimulates innovation in a healthy direction in all sectors, and encourages governments and corporations to take environmental law and due diligence seriously.
