Wildlife species such as American bald eagles are dying in the Commonwealth from rat poisons like Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs). In 2023, the beloved breeding female bald eagle “MK” of the Mysic River watershed, succumbed to SGARs poisoning. She was the third bald eagle confirmed to have died from this in the Boston metro area since 2021. However, hundreds (if not likely thousands) of other animals are sickened by and die due to SGARS exposure in the state every year. Save Massachusetts Wildlife raises awareness about these impacts and seeds potential for community level action.

Your contribution has helped create educational materials like the animated short included above.

In November 2024, Save Massachusetts Wildlife established the "MRP Owls Memorial Fund." The MRP Owls, were the family of Great Horned Owls that nested in Arlington's town park, Menotomy Rocks Park. In late spring 2022, the mother owl and her two fledglings were found dead and all symptoms pointed to anticoagulant poisoning. The adult male was the lone survivor. In late November 2022, he found a new mate but only a few weeks later in early December, she too was found on the ground and died en route to a wildlife rehabber. Concerned residents crowd-funded a necropsy, which found SGARs poisoning to be the cause of death. With this in mind, Save Massachusetts Wildlife funds necropsies and liver panel testing of dead raptors reported to our organization in the Boston metro area. In just the past three months, we have tested 20 birds. All tested for anticoagulant exposure in the lethal range.

- Your donations can fund additional necropsies/liver testing of dead birds of prey.

- More animated shorts.

- A billboard advertising campaign on the MBTA Red Line.
