In Coconino County, lack of dental care for adults is one of the top health concerns, especially in rural areas. Many adults don’t have dental insurance, so they often delay care—worsening serious health issues like heart disease and diabetes, which are closely linked to poor oral health. These untreated conditions also drive up healthcare costs, but the connection between dental and overall health is often overlooked.
Our free dental clinics help close this gap by offering care to adults who can't afford it. Current Medicaid (AHCCCS) coverage is very limited—only two local providers accept adult patients, and just one is taking new ones. Plus, coverage is capped at $1,000 per year. Many low-income residents don’t qualify for AHCCCS due to income limits, especially in Flagstaff where the high minimum wage disqualifies even full-time workers from assistance.
