ABOUT FIRST RESPONDER THERAPY DOGS

OUR MISSION

First Responder Therapy Dogs lead the way in addressing behavioral health needs by providing emotional support to first responders. Research shows that therapy dog services positively impact this population's behavioral health issues.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Every year, thousands of fires occur in California. Marin County alone has over 400 firefighters working 365 days a year not to mention the paramedics, dispatchers, search and rescue and law enforcement who also answer the call to help and protect. Being on the frontlines is physically and mentally challenging, and these everyday heroes

WHAT WE DO

First Responder Therapy Dogs have been working in the field for nearly two years, calming and putting smiles on hundreds of first responders faces. Their duties have included: making scheduled visits to fire stations, attending debriefing/defusing sessions following difficult service calls, and visiting base camps at wildland fires.

First Responder Therapy Dogs address behavioral health needs by providing emotional support to first responders with the use of therapy dogs.

GOALS

•  Delivering therapy dog services to first responders in a practical, healthy, and safe manner.•  Providing a platform for education regarding the use of therapy dogs to support first responders.

 

  • Assist in educating first responders that asking and receiving help is appropriate
  • Inform the broader community about the challenges faced by first responders
  • Share the effective results therapy dogs can provide

 

•  Expanding the number of therapy dogs available to provide services.•  Growing available therapy dog services and programs.•  Developing a sustainable funding plan.
