Summary
This project empowers 1000 adolescent girls in rural
Amritsar rural areas who can otherwise drop out of school, to be
resilient and continue learning during and post Covid-19 crisis. It
trains rural adolescent girls in life skills and making their own
sanitary pads. It also provides mentorship support to 60 school
teachers on gender-sensitive pedagogy and sensitisation to 1,000+
parents and community members about the required support to girls
during Covid-19, impacting 10,000+ adolescent girls.
Every year about 584 girls drop out of school in Amritsar due to
early and forced marriages and lack of basic needs such as sanitary
pads according to UNESCO. As schools closed, due to Covid-19, girls in
poor families continue to be vulnerable as men take advantage to
provide sanitary pads in exchange for sex. Daily, one girl gets
pregnant and or is forced into marriage. This project will empower 658
adolescent girls with life skills and making sanitary pads while
impacting 5000+ others.
Solution
This project trains 658 rural adolescent girls in
making sanitary pads; candle making jute bags provides training on
life skills to boost their agency and power to navigate the
gender-based challenges in their communities and schools. It provides
training to 60 teachers within school communities on gender-sensitive
pedagogy and wellbeing as they support students' learning during and
post Covid-19. It also provides sensitisation for 600+ parents
impacting 5,000+ adolescent girls.
Long-Term Impact
This project empowers 658 girls in making
sanitary pads and life skills allowing them to navigate life
situations and challenges, realise their full potential, completing
education which is key to lifting them and their families out of the
vicious cycle of poverty. It also provides mentorship support to 60
school teachers on gender-sensitive pedagogy and sensitisation to 600+
parents and community members about the required support to girls
during Covid-19, impacting 5,000+
