FundRazr Campaign Success: Alex’s Army
FundRazr believes in helping people build a community of giving. Well this FundRazr campaign was able to do just that. This is a touching story of how a family was able to use FundRazr to help Alex, a 4 year old with Neuroblastoma.
Alex’s Army FundRazr Success Story
by Maya McGuckian
It has been my honor and privilege to set up a fundraiser to help my my brother (Noah) and his wife (Jamie) through the horrific experience of suddenly having a child diagnosed with an aggressively developing cancer.
My nephew, Alex, is an amazingly funny, kind, and loving 4 year old child. At the end of September, he showed no symptoms. Less than 3 weeks later he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Today he is undergoing chemo to beat his aggressive cancer and thankfully has been responding well to the harsh treatments.
Neuroblastoma is a rare disease in which a solid tumor (a lump or mass caused by uncontrolled or abnormal cell growth) is formed by special nerve cells called neuroblasts. Normally, these immature cells grow and mature into functioning nerve cells. But in neuroblastoma, they become cancer cells instead. Children diagnosed with neuroblastoma are usually younger than 5 years old, with the majority of new cases occurring among those younger than 1 year old. Only about 700 new cases of neuroblastoma are diagnosed each year in the United States.
As soon as I heard the news, I knew it was time to take action to do whatever I could (being hundreds of miles away) to help ease the stress of the finances so they could concentrate on the most important thing: getting Alex better. So I created a Facebook page dedicated to Alex to help keep our families informed and have it be a central information site. Alex has always had a following of friends and family and so we became his army; Alex’s Army was born. I set up a Paypal account and then found FundRazr.
We reached out to thousands of people who we love through Facebook. We took it a step further and began to spread Alex’s story by posting on pages of people and organizations Alex respects and admires, FIREFIGHTERS, nationwide. Alex has always loved fireman and has shown his devotion and admiration of them since he was 2. He wears full-on bunker gear everywhere, even in 90 degree heat. We have pictures to prove it and that caught their attention! And our army grew by leaps and bounds!
My brother and his wife have posted amazingly “real” messages, some heartbreaking, some inspirational, chronicling the last 2 1/2 months of their experience with Alex, his cancer, his treatments, keeping the family together, the balancing act of parenting two other healthy children, etc. People have become part of our extended family through social media.
My brother has given a voice to familes grieving and families who have been touched by similar circumstances. They have found comfort and support through our community.
FundRazr has allowed the family the flexibility of not having to worry about the initial shock of outrageous co-pays, medications, even simple expenses like fueling their vehicle. Now they still have many expenses and we have not raised nearly enough money to help them through this entire ordeal, but it has been a good start to help ease the initial financial burden.
FundRazr has a very user-friendly site and people seemed to feel more secure donating through your site, as opposed to directly donating through a PayPal. Thank you for helping us create a more professional fundraising campaign.
