Erin Will Stop At Nothing To Volunteer In Haiti
In March 2015, Erin Segall has the opportunity to go to Jacmel, Haiti and be part of the Global Health Perspectives internship through Denver School of Nursing. This service learning internship will allow her to work with LOVE Takes Root, La Concord Orphanage and the new medical clinic to further my nursing school education.
The focus of Erin’s school trip will be to help the 50 orphans move to their new location and provide the needed care to the local community. Erin will scrub in and assist with surgical needs, and their main goal is to empower the local Haitian health care providers to enable the continuity of this care when they leave. I spoke with Erin on her experience raising money with the support of her social network, and how she has managed to raise over $2000.
1. What are you raising money for?
I am a nursing student raising money to take a 10 day trip to Haiti over my next break. All money raised will go to medical outreach supplies and equipment, the flight and housing while in Haiti. The purpose of this trip is to help out the local Haitian community and solidify the knowledge I am learning in nursing school.
2. Why did you decide to turn to crowdfunding?
This is an extracurricular event, and requires extra funding, beyond tuition. While in school I am only working part time to cover living expenses, and using student loans to pay the rest. For this reason, I am looking to friends, family and the community to help with the added cost of the trip so that I am able to afford this amazing experience.
3. How did you initially promote your campaign and create a community of support?
I began to promote my campaign by using the Fundrazr website. I posted the link on my Facebook page and sent it separately to anyone I thought might be interested in the cause, and in supporting me personally in my nursing goals. By following the advice of the FundRazr team about promoting often and using pictures, I have been fortunate enough to raise 80% of my goal!
4. What has been a challenge you’ve faced while crowdfunding?
The biggest challenge at this point is that since I have not yet been on this trip, I don’t have enough pertinent information to share on a daily basis with followers. I am in the process of setting up a few Q&A’s with other people who have been down to Haiti with the same organization, so that I am better aware of the amazing experiences I might have, and can use those to promote my trip.
5. What has been the highlight of your crowdfunding experience?
The highlight of this experience is how generous people are, and how many people have seen my campaign! It is amazing how using a public forum to ask for help truly works!
6. Do you have any advice for others who want to start crowdfunding?
You have nothing to lose, and you will never know the support will receive until you try! Thank you for making my trip possible!
