Community Gives Hope To Toddler Natalie

Helping our community get to the next level of crowdfunding success

Tarryn Rudolph’s close friend and coworker Meredith and her husband, Andrew, recently received devastating news that their 18 month old daughter Natalie has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, type 2. It’s a progressive neuromuscular disease that will cause her muscles to weaken and waste away.

Natalie will never walk and will require a wheelchair among many other devices to help her live a normal as possible life. Tarryn knew they were not the kind of people to ask for help, so she decided to turn to their friends to help Meredith and Andrew make some of the many changes they will need in their lives. This includes buying a van that can be equipped with wheelchair ramps and equipment. I spoke with Tarryn on how they managed to raise over $22K in just 7 days, and the impact the recent news coverage has had on their FundRazr campaign.

1. Why did you decide to turn to crowdfunding?

I decided to do crowdfunding for this family in order to help raise funds to buy a wheelchair accessible van for them. This will be one of the many financial strains they will need to face over the years.

2. How did you manage to get news coverage for this story in ‘The Province’?

The Province actually contacted me. One of Meredith’s roller derby teammates posted the FundRazr link to the derby Facebook page. One of The Province writers follows the derby page on Facebook and saw the link.

3. How has news coverage impacted your campaign?

The article has reached thousands of people who have donated. Strangers who work hard for their money and have still found it in their hearts to donate to the cause. Its a true example of how there are still good people in the world. It has been absolutely mind blowing and amazing to see people come through to support this.

4. How did you start promote your campaign and create a community of support?

I posted the campaign link on Facebook and from there it took off. Within hours, friends had shared the link and in turn friends of theirs shared the link. It was a true snowball effect!

5. What has been a challenge you faced while crowdfunding?

It’s hard asking people for money. I know how hard people work and the cost of living in the lower mainland (British Columbia, Canada), so I always have some sort of guilt when I see these large donations being made.

6. What has been the highlight of your crowdfunding experience so far?

FundRazr has been an amazing site. User friendly and easily accessible. Social media like Facebook and Twitter have promoted this campaign and has spread it far and wide. The true highlight has been seeing the community pull through for this little girl. Its truly amazing to see people donate in times like this. It has also brought more awareness to Spinal Muscular Atrophy, something I had never heard of prior to Natalie being diagnosed. Not only are we helping this little girl, but more awareness may bring more donations and funding to find a cure for SMA.

7. Do you have any advice for others who want to start crowdfunding?

Give it a shot. I never thought I would get more than a couple hundred dollars, but its gone way beyond that. You just never know. I would just like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for their generous donations to help Meredith, Andrew and of course, little Natalie.
