What is the Penland Post Office Project? 

Penland Post Office Project was established by community members to preserve the building that the Penland Post Office operates out of and to restore the General Store side. The building dates to 1902 and is on the US Historical Registry. The video above, filmed when Jean McLaughlin was the Executive Director of the Penland School of Crafts, explains more. 

Progress to date:

The Penland Post Office Project has made a lot of progress over the last decade in completing necessary repairs needed to stabilize the aging building.  At the time of Hurricane Helene, we were closing in on completion of a final stage renovation project that would bring septic and well service to the building, allowing it to be serviceable to the wider community. During 2024, funds were being raised to complete the renovations, but now additional repairs will need to be completed in the wake of Helene.

How Your Contribution Will Help :

The funds from this campaign will be used to repair the damages to the floor, insulation, walls, roof and parking lot that were sustained in the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.  They will enable us to resume  the renovations that were in progress before Helene: to bring the building into the modern era by drilling a well, installing a septic system, public restroom and heating.  As we assess the damages over the next month, new concerns may arise, and funds will be channeled from this campaign to support those needs. 

Penland Post Office Project has retained the permits and easements needed for the well and septic. We've gotten engineering and architectural plans for the repairs and renovations for installing the restroom as well as extra space that will house a small Penland Post Office museum and community space. We intend to rent out the "General Store" space when the project is completed....possibly a small business or local artist.
