HEROES STORY
Hero came to the Nowzad clinic from Hairathan close to Mazar.
He was being cared for by a kind ANP (Afghan National Policeman).
The puppy had severely injured his paw (we think he was hit
with a car, but we’re not sure). He had broken 3 digits and since
the ANP didn’t know of any veterinary clinics he did his best to
look after the injured pup.
A visiting expat saw the plight of the puppy and thankfully
sent him to the Nowzad clinic immediately.
Unfortunately it was too late to save his claws and his pad,
so the Nowzad veterinary team successfully amputated them.
He is healing quickly now, but will need to wear a specialist
boot for the rest of his life.
This gorgeous boy is recovering fast foot is getting better
day by day, however sadly his pad will never grow back, so he will
need boots to help him have a normal life. But he is walking and
playing around with no issues.
He is adorable and very friendly.
We already started to fundraise for Hero as Vicky from the UK Embassy kindly offered to foster him, we are now so pleased to say that Hero has found a loving forever home in the USA!
Here, his new very special soldier tells her story about why she wants to give Hero a home:
My name is Laura, and I grew up in a military family near Washington, D.C. I have spent my whole life with dogs, and hold a special place in my heart for our first rescue, Mr. Timmy. Mr. Timmy changed my perception about Pitbulls and made me a better person. I miss him and think about him every day.
I
am currently serving in the U.S. Army on my third deployment
in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. I first heard about Nowzad through
Ken, a proud parent of four rescue dogs from our camp through the
Nowzad Organization.
We found Birdie near a Guard Tower,
covered in oil, fleas, and ticks. Despite her condition, she was the
toughest, sweetest, most loving dog. I decided to adopt Birdie, and
send her to the kind folks at Nowzad in Kabul. Sadly, after a few
days in the shelter, Birdie started to show symptoms of rabies and
had to be euthanized.
Birdie was the brightest moment of my
deployment, even for a short while. While I regret that I could not
give Birdie a home, I am so thankful that she did not go through the
process alone. After hearing the news, I asked if there were any
other pups in the shelter that wanted to come to the United States.
It is truly heartbreaking to see the conditions that the dogs live
in here, and I wish I could take them all home. Fortunately, I was
quickly introduced to Hero, and I could not say no to this sweet
boy. I cannot wait to redeploy and give Hero a life that he deserves.

Dogs small animal clinic and shelter in Kabul.
The total required for a companion animal to travel to North
