Help Nowzad get the 5 Farah pups to the USA!

Our friends at No Dogs Get Left Behind have generously offered to fundraise for Fox and Tank and contribute towards Hoosier BUT we still need the Nowzad Family to rally for their siblings and momma dog!

Here are their stories:

Fox's Soldier Savior says:

The puppies came out of nowhere. It was late, probably around 2am, when someone came to our front step and announced that a litter of puppies had been delivered in the howitzer pit and needed to be moved as soon as possible before the gun went off and they were all killed. The five of us stood up with a newfound sense of purpose and duty and quickly moved to help move the pups and their mom to a safer location. 

Over the next two weeks, I made it my daily mission to keep the puppies and the mom alive. From bringing them fresh water and food throughout the day, to scaring off predators on base, to figuring out ways to keep them cool throughout the miserably hot days, tending to their wellbeing was a fulfilling (if taxing) goal. And when the base took fire at one point during their stay, I found myself thinking about their safety in the midst of the chaos. That’s when I knew I had to take one home. And that’s when I discovered Fox.

Fox was the runt. Fox was also the feistiest. He would blindly fight his way through the squirming puppy pile to find an open teet during feeding time and would end up being one of the first puppies to start walking. I fell in love with the patterns on his face and would melt every time I held him and he comfortably drifted to sleep in my arms. 

When I get home, I’ll find in Fox a friend and companion that can help me adjust back to life in the US. I’ll need his energy to inspire me on days that I have none. He will be a constant a reminder of both hard and good times in Afghanistan.

Kelly's Soldier Savior say:

Hi, I am Staff Sergeant J.D. Nelson and I am a critical care flight paramedic with the United States Army DUSTOFF. I’m currently serving my third combat tour to Afghanistan and have been given a unique opportunity to save yet another life.

As a flight paramedic, I have seen the horrors of war and during each deployment I’ve had the opportunity to have a dog on base that has helped me and other soldiers cope with those horrors. These dogs have helped me through some of the most difficult times of my career and were always there to comfort me after a tough call.

This cute puppy has been named Kelly after the famous founder of DUSTOFF, Major Charles Kelly, who gave his life while rescuing Soldiers from the battlefields of Vietnam. Kelly was born to a stray dog on small base in southern Afghanistan. The medical team there took the momma in and made sure she stayed healthy so she could give birth. After giving birth to Kelly and a few other puppies, she and the puppies were cared for by the medical team until they made it to the Nowzad shelter in Kabul. Kelly is such a sweetheart and made everyone on base smile with her loving attitude. 

The dogs in this country have given me so much and now it’s my turn to give back to them. I have the opportunity to save Kelly’s life and give her a home where she will be loved and cared for without fear of starvation or death. 

This process is long and expensive, but I hope that with your help I will be able to bring Kelly home with me!

Bear's Soldier Savior says:

The puppies were originally born in our artillery pit and had the gun fired while they were there they all would have died. We moved them to the bunker next to our building were we continued to care for them. Shortly after they were born the mother developed a life threatening infection that we all worked hard to heal with food water and antibiotics. Our caring for and playing with the puppies and mother was a great short term stress reliever for all on the base especially after long operations. I'm wanting to adopted the little guy because of the work we put in to save them as well as the joy and entertainment they provided us.

Hoosier's Soldier Savior says:

I am currently a US Army Medic serving in Afghanistan. When I got on this camp I saw a pregnant dog and I made sure to feed her every night in hopes to help her stay as healthy as possible. When the pups were born, myself and a few others primarily took care of the mom and her pups to help the mom as much as possible. The heat and the nasty environment proved challenging for them in the first week. I felt I had to do something more to save them. I ran into someone on the camp who knew how to rescue the dogs and about nowzad; we instantly got to work on getting them to the nowzad shelter. One of the pups began to crawl to my feet after a week and I would pick him up and just hold him. I named him Hoosier. I decided that I was going to adopt him because he just made my day every time I went into the bunker where they stayed. I worked with a few others to gather as many people as possible to adopt the rest of the litter because I couldn’t just save one. Please help me to raise the funds to send Hoosier home so I can see my little buddy when I return to the United States and to never be separated again. 

Tanks' Soldier Savior says:

I'm trying to raise money to send this little puppy that brought a smile to my face home to do the same for my boys. When I was sent to deploy, it was only a short time after we had lost our family dog to epilepsy and cancer .
We had him for both our kids whole lives and they didn't know a world with out him . My wife and I are hoping to bring such love and laughter back into our home as our other dog did. 
Both my five year old and one year old sons got the chance to see pictures of the puppy we know as " Tank" creatively chosen by my oldest who loves trucks .
Please help bring Tank home to these two brave little boys that need love as much as Tank does. 

Luna’s story

My name is Bria. I am coworkers and best friends with Fox’s adopter's girlfriend.
I remember the first day she told me about the existence of the pups and all they’d been through in just the first few weeks of their lives. I remember wanted so badly to help and becoming personally invested in their story. I would ask daily for updates on their condition and swoon at any pictures I laid my eyes on. These pups have survived through an active war zone, sweltering heat and even overcome sickness thanks to the soldiers who have found them and the Nowzad shelter. I want to join this support system and ensure that they only ever seen better days.

Of all the pups, Luna stood out to me immediately. She is a fighter, I can tell. She, her brothers and her sisters have shown so much strength and I would be proud to have her become a part of my home. Her and Fox growing up as brother and sister will be amazing and I’m glad I’ll be a part of it.

 Noodle's Soldier savior says:

 I would love to adopt one, as I was out there with them spending 2-3 hours each night feeding their mom and taking care of them. I had decided while I was still in Farah that if puppy 7 didn’t get adopted, I would take her home. My wife and I would love to give her a happy home for the rest of her life.

Riri's (momma dog!) New Owner's says:

Carl and I are dog people. We lost our dear half mastiff-half great dane
earlier this year, and decided we would wait about a year to adopt a new
dog.
When we heard the story of RiRi and how the soldiers took her and
her pups under their wing, cared for them so lovingly, and are now
adopting the pups, it just didn't seem like RiRi should be put back out
on the street. So we would like to adopt RiRi in honor of the soldiers
who saved her life and those of her (7!) pups, in honor of the
resilience of humans and animals on our planet, even in stressful times,
and in honor of the special role that dogs play in the hearts and lives
of us humans. We look forward to giving RiRi a loving and safe home
where she can live out her days!
