Ninawá Pai da Mata (Father of the Forest - Spiritual Leader of Novo Futuro Villag) have asked Lara Jacoski and Patrick Belem (Bem-te-vi Produções) to put together this crowdfunding to support his new project, which he have already started by himself, but due to the covid, he can't travel and work outside of the village so he is lacking funds to continue to make it happen.
WHO ARE WE
Ninawá Pai da Mata (Father of the Forest)
Spiritual leader of Novo Futuro Village at the Humaitá
Indigenous Land. More than 20 years ago, Ninawa has opened a new
village to live on their own culture. Ninawa is a defensor for the
forest and support the young generation on valeuing and living from
their culture, on also creating bridges with the modern time we live in.
Lara Jacoski and Patrick Belem (Bem-te-vi Produções)
Filmmakers and producers from Brazil, since 2013 the
independent film Bem-te-vi (from the great bird kiskadee) has its
mission to enter various realities and serve as a bridge (with art,
audiovisual, sound and projects in general) for minorities with
society in a human, loving way, serving as a tool that bring their
voices further.
Emanuel Trigo (Raíz das Imagens)
For more than 10 years, Rodrigo visits different indigenous
villages all over Brazil, bringing film workshops on culture revival,
besides making an ancestral seeds fair. By teaching films, Trigo
incentives the villagers to research their culture, specially what is
held only by elders, and make films about it.
Carou Trebitsch (Guardians Huni Kuin & Mi Mawai)
Cultural producer, she has been working with the Huni Kuin
people for 10 years developing cultural projects. For the past 4
years she has been developing the Mi Mawai a musical
label that works for contemporary indigenous music and their copyright.
CAUSE
THE REALITY
We all know that the Huni Kuin
depends on outside support, and specially, internationally support.
This happens mainly because the government is not doing their duties
about the indigenous people in Brazil - and its just getting worse.
Because of that the Huni Kuin started to work by their own and
traveling around Brazil and internationally. Due to the covid, the
Huni Kuin couldn’t travel and work (with the medicines neither with
artefacts), stopping all their work and income.
THE BACKGROUND
Because of Huni Kuin story where they have lost much of their
culture by the assassination of the elders (their alive books - as
they call the elders), and observing the young generation has many
inputs the past generation didn't have, being it easy to consume other
cultures and forget their own - That's why all indigenous tribes are
investing at their culture.
PROJECT FOR THE YOUTH
Ninawá observing that the young generation are learning very
fast the culture that was once lost, highlighting themselves very much
specially with the music (among arts as general and spiritual work),
Ninawá wants to support the young generation by preserving their
culture and endorsing it, so the young generation don't get lost in
other culture. Yes, preserving the culture is the KEY point
for many indigenous people as they have lost too much they
cant risk loosing more, so they are putting all their efforts
and doing everything they can to support the young
generation.
Just imagine, a bunch of teenagers living 4
days from the nearest city in the middle of the forest. This is the
age they get bored, they wanna try new things, they wanna explore new
things. So to make something FOR THEM at the village is a way of
offering what they like the most, in the best way possible, inside
their home - specially at this particular time we are living in.
BUT SPECIALLY, TO PRESERVE AND SHARE CULTURE
To
preserve culture means to endorse the knowledge of elders. Ninawá has
started to build with his own resources, a RECORDING HOUSE to give the
youth a place to attend, but is much more than that.
A music house is the best move of Ninawá, thinking
about culture preservation, as he is giving something new and modern
to he Youth, at the same time endorsing their ancestry/roots by making
jointed projects that has he fuel from the modern times, but always
looking for the ancient knowledge.
A STUDIO THAT IS ALSO A CULTURE HOUSE
This studio house could be also called the CULTURE HOUSE, a
place where youngsters will be draw by their own interests but they
will receive much more. A program will be made with the elders and
man/woman leaders, offering teachings on culture by proposing
possibilities to make projects by the youth - projects that will be
decided collectively by the villagers regarding their own
views/needs/problems/dreams and so on, some as: Ancient culture
workshops will be held with elders from Humaitá and beyond; Film
projects that seeks to rescue culture that it has been lost of almost
lost; Traveling plans on rescuing culture in another indigenous land;
Music CD's on traditional and new culture...
ACCESIBILITY
The music house also means accessibility, so the
project happens at the Novo Futuro Village - the last village from
Humaitá Indigenous Land, but its dedicated also for usage of all
territory which other 6 villages live (aprox. 500 people!), in the
middle of the Amazon forest.
Ninawá also gave the young
generation and the entire village access to internet, so they can
mobilize themselves on searching for resources for their basic needs,
and also be able to share about their culture (and music!!!) all that
without the need to get out of their village.
So at the end, this
project is for the youth, but for all people from the village and in a
way, it also contemplate the entire Huni Kuin people by sharing,
preserving and valuing their culture.
WHAT WILL BE DONE?
With this house the Huni Kuin will learn how to use audio equipment, film equipment and be able to record themselves in their own way, with their own style. And so, be able to share about their culture nationally and internationally, without the constant need to get out of their home and the forest in order to make a living and support their community.
The village just have installed internet at their village so they can have contact with the outside world and share about their lives. It's a necessary work to share about their culture and identity so they can be recognized and valued, as Brazil is very instable about indigenous rights.
1: The project concentrates to finish the building
the structure of the house (the structure Ninawá already built himself 50%)
2: The second phase is to build the internal
structure, working on isolation/acoustic and preparing the inside for
the forest conditions, thinking about mold, moisture, dust, termite,
strong rains and so on.
3: Equipping the inside with all materials for sound
recording and film making. Write a normative on the usage and taking
care of equipments. Electing the first duo that will be in charge of
the building.
4: Meetings with groups of elders, adults, youth and
leaderships to get to know how this building/project can support the
village as a whole, and also to support the whole territory.
5: Making a launch party of this new building where
in a circle, it will be shared dreams and purpose for this building by
all villagers of Humaitá. - Possible to already film/record this
gathering to compose the film or short films to be shared at the
Youtube Humaitá Channel.
6: Teaching the villagers on how to use the
equipments, how to make a music recording and how to make a film by
proposing a workshop to make a project in a theme they choose, with
our mentorship.
7: Follow up the project, making together a film and
a music recording, till the very end till it's distribution, as the
indigenous learn by observance.
8: Coming back to the village twice a year for 3
years in order to keep supporting new projects, giving technical
assistance on using the equipments, fixing what was broke and so on.
9: Help to share/distribute the products generated by
the villagers with the world by translating, sending to film festivals
and to international media.
10: Make a film of the whole project to be shared at
national and international media.
Video from Txana Yubē, one of the great musicians from Novo Futuro Village with his version of the traditional song "Nai Bai Sitimã". Txana Yube is being prepared to be a Pajé (Shaman), having already carried out diets in the forest with the Eskawatã Kayawei Group led by spiritual leader & Pajé Ninawa Pai da Mata, and in his village, he is one of the members of the cultural and musicians, Kayawei Group.
