Writing is lonely work. Anyone who has ever sat with a pen poised on a blank page or with their fingers hovering over a keyboard, an empty screen in front of them, knows this to be true. Especially writers who sit at the margins of the literary world because…

…they are just starting out and don’t know where to begin;

…they don’t have the time or resources for an MFA or to attend any of the all-too-often prohibitively expensive workshops offered in New York City;

…who they are or where they’re from means not just their voices, but also the daily reality of their lives, are marginalized.

Add to those reasons because they live in Queens and don’t feel at home in the Manhattan or Brooklyn literary scenes and you have described the need Newtown Literary exists to fill.

For the past seven years, through our twice-yearly literary journal Newtown Literary, the free classes we offer, and the readings and other events we sponsor, we’ve been helping Queens writers find the community they need to feel less alone and to thrive as they claim the literary careers they want for themselves.

Working with these writers reminds us constantly that their stories are our stories. That the work they create—because it allows us to see ourselves and each other more fully as human beings—helps to create in turn the kind of community in which we want to live. Please consider donating to Newtown Literary to help us continue this valuable and necessary work.
