Molly Kenzler hasn't added a story.
Hi from our family threesome -- Molly Kenzler, Christine Cruz, and Samantha Cruz.
We are writing to our family and friends to invite you to join us in funding a bakery business in Rwanda. The bakery will become the means for older girls / young women in child-headed households to manage their daily needs, and to help with the needs of their community.
Samantha shares: When my grandma went to Africa I donated clothes for her to take, knowing they were going to people who needed them a lot more than I did. Years later grandma mentioned something called African Road. Going to the African Road gala event was magical, teaching guests all about those cultures, even before the speeches. The speeches were beautiful, describing in full detail everything African Road does. It seemed unreal, how this one organization could do so much for people who needed it most. And when they were asking for bids, I had trouble keeping my arm down. I love African Road and hope one day I can do work for them, too.
Christine writes: The Philanthropic Initiative states, "There is a strong body of research demonstrating that the most effective way to change the world is through investments related to women and girls. Improving the life of a woman creates benefit and opportunity for her extended family, future generations and even the larger community in which she lives. Since women are often disproportionately impacted by the issues of the world — including poverty, health care, human trafficking, natural disasters, education, homelessness and human rights, among others — supporting women and girls, if done well, is high-impact philanthropy."
As my daughter matures before my eyes I am reminded of how fortunate we are to live here, and how challenging it would be to raise a girl in almost any developing nation. Samantha has opportunities for schooling and sport and social interaction because she has a community of tax payers who support schools, libraries, parks. The women and girls we seek to help do not have these social structures in place. The bakery project will provide an opportunity for the women and girls in the village to learn marketable skills, earn income and foster interaction and growth within their own community.
The world can seem an enormous place - the number of needy, overwhelming. It is easy to get lost in the big picture, so I start small. Giving directly to this one project will have both immediate impact and long-term potential for positive change. Any dollar amount will help. Thank you for taking the time to view this site.
Molly says: I visited Rwanda in 2007 with my friend Kelly Bean. Kelly is a visionary, and with her founding partner, Lori Martin, established African Road, a non-profit located in Tigard, Oregon. They determined that the work of African Road would be neither charity nor aid, but a partnering with local East African 'changemakers' to lift communities out of poverty. This approach lines up with my strong belief that assisting people in gaining skills, building a strong work ethic, and taking personal responsibility will foster stability in communities - wherever in the world they are. Rwanda may seem a long way away, but impacts from world events have significant consequences everywhere, so I see this little 'cottage industry' as a strong contributor to peace and stability.
***MATCHING FUNDS CHALLENGE*** -- every dollar you give will be doubled!
Since the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide, the women and girls of the Togetherness Cooperative have supported each other as sisters and mentors. In their rural community, there are few jobs for women, and most live on less than $1 a day.
These women and girls seek skills to break the cycle of poverty and empower themselves for life.
That’s where you come in.
With your help, African Road will bring a bakery business to the women of Togetherness. The bakery will provide:
- Jobs for women
- Training
- Nutrition
- Business skills
- Financial skills
- Sustainable income for the entire cooperative
- A brand new, state-of-the-art bakery building!!! Pictured below.
Will you help to start the Women’s Bakery? Donate $50 or an amount of your choice to African Road today. Your tax-deductible gift will help to open The Women’s Bakery and empower these women for life.
***GREAT NEWS -- every dollar you give will be matched!*** Donate today and your gift will go twice as far to help us reach our goal!
African Road's work goes beyond starting a bakery. We are working with communities throughout East Africa to help break the cycle of poverty.
