With 20+ years of mindfulness, connection, community, health, commitment & love; HLF was created by brothers Ali and Atman Smith and their best friend Andres Gonzalez. The organization’s innovative and effective work has been featured in multiple media outlets including Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, PBS, Mindful Magazine, CNN, and CBS, as well as O the Oprah Magazine, The Washington Post, Upworthy, and the book A Mindful Nation by Congressman Tim Ryan to name a few.

OUR MINDFUL MOMENT PROGRAM
In 2021 they served more than 5,000 students weekly, positively impacting children, families, and communities in Baltimore. In a local school in Baltimore, before we arrived the school had upwards of 100 suspensions per year (north west Baltimore is one of the most dangerous, drug ridden neighborhoods in the country) after two years of running their Mindful Moment program there were 0 suspensions for 8 years in a row.Our work has resulted in multiple kids leaving gangs, being taken off psych meds and ultimately feeling more emotionally stable to be leaders in the community. |  |
THE IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM
Results from the Mindful Moment program have shown positive impacts on students' inside and outside the classroom.The program has effectively supported the social and emotional well-being of students, leading to reductions in suspensions and fights, as well as improvements in attendance, freshman GPA, freshman promotions, and overall school climate. The program has been shown to have long-term benefits, including greater empathy and confidence, which lead to stronger interpersonal bonds and a greater sense of community.

OUR CALL TO ACTION
We need your help to bring our Mindful Moment programs to six new cities: Chicago, Denver, Richmond, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee.
Our goal is to give students, teachers, and the mindfulness staff we train, the tools necessary to correct behaviors in a non-punitive way and allow the time to work through problems before a severe punishment such as suspension takes place. Administrators continue to see a drastic reduction in suspension and referral numbers, an improvement in self-regulation skills and in the overall school climate, as well as reductions in anxiety and stress, the healing of trauma, and improved mental health outcomes.

 |  |  | In 2022, HLF created a multi-year strategic plan and began working with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to expand to other underserved areas across the United States. CGI works with established organizations to develop Commitments to Action to address climate resilience, health equity, and inclusive economic recovery and growth. Aligned with health equity, our goal is to implement our Mindful Moment program in new cities.
We partnered with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk’s Trauma Research Foundation (TRF) to lead with evaluation and research of this project. They will look at effects on healing trauma, self-regulation, mental health outcomes and other measures for students. As well as the effects on teacher burnout and their ability to heal from secondary trauma. TRF will also examine the effects of the training and program facilitation on Mindful Moment staff. Local researcher, Dr. Lenwood Hayman will be HLF’s local research lead and support TRF in the research.
