Mamihlapinatapai in a nutshell

This page is dedicated to the art project "Mamihlapinatapai", carried by a collective mostly based in France. It's a bamboo structure that will be built in July 2020 in the Monegros desert in Spain, during the international event Nowhere . (called “burn”). It will become a place of life and celebration for the participants.

What is a burn ?

A burn is an event co-created by the participants (or “burners”), inspired by the culture and the principles developed by the Burning Man event (USA). The burner community is international, we count multiples annual burns (called “regional burns”) taking place all around the world. They are all driven by the 10 principles and propose a large panel of activities including artistiques installations, music and workshops of all kinds. A lost word

Mamihlapinatapai is the name given to the Temple imagined for Nowhere 2020. It is a Yagan word that comes from the indigenous languages of Tierra del Fuego, which describes a shared desire between two people, in which both wishes that the other will make the first step.

A healing place 

A spiritual landmark

At the heart of Nowhere, two waves of bamboo rise from the earth to meet in the sky, leading our gaze upwards. Based on Fibonacci’s spiral the design invites us to reconnect with the geometry of our environment, forming a new landmark in the Monegros Desert .

A Temple is a space that invites one to reconnection. A space of reconnection with oneself and with that which is greater and beyond the self. It is an environment that leads us to search deep within ourselves, looking for meaning. When answers are found, the Temple  helps us to let the past go and be reborn.

The Temple of Playfulness

While Burning Man’s temple is dedicated to contemplation, mourning and memory, Mamihlapinatapai celebrates life, the energy that allows us to play with the obstacles that punctuates our physical and spiritual journey. Its structure is formed by two waves embracing each other without touching and represents the sensuality of an encounter. Everything is there but nothing is done yet.

Waves of co-creation

Who are we ?

No art installation without a strong team ! We are a collective spread out through France, gathering newbies, veteran burners, bamboo addicts, video makers, architects and all kinds of other talents. From Crème Brûlée to Burning Man, Youen Perhirin (aka O’Malley) and his fantastic crew of bamboo addicts participated in numerous projects including Galaxia (Black Rock’s Temple 2018), The Lighthouse (Nowhere 2018), The Temple of Tokamak (Borderlands 2019), Kaguya (Katerpolar’s Structure at Crème Brûlée 2018), The Maze (Nowhere 2019).

Bamboo can be transformed and manipulated with tools that are accessible to everyone without any experience or use of energy other than that of our hands. The construction of this Temple thus offers us the opportunity to transmit knowledge through educational workshops led by professional bamboo workers. Participants will learn how to split, tie, and bend the bamboo poles, leaving an intact and reusable material. The choice of a flexible and lightweight material is an open door to co-creation.

Interactivity with the community

All stages of this project involves the community, from its conception to its construction, through its funding, culminating in its ritual use during Nowhere 2020 .

The two separate structures will be connected to each other by the bonds that community members will forge. String, wool and fabric will be made available to the community to connect the two structures.

Participating in this project is an opportunity to grow, to face the challenges encountered with creativity and to learn through play by sharing a spiritual communal experience.

The Temple will not be burned but deconstructed and the sacred material will participate in building new communities, participatory and supportive spaces in accordance with the principle of gifting which are so dear to the burners community. Cette page est dédiée au projet artistique « Mamihlapinatapai », porté par un collectif essentiellement basé en France. Il s’agit d’une installation destinée à être construite en juillet 2020 dans le désert du Monegros en Espagne, lors de l’ évènement international Nowhere .(aussi appelé “burn”). Ils sont tous régis par 10 principes communs et proposent un panel d’activités très riche composé d’installations artistiques, de musique et d’ateliers sur des sujets extrêmement variés. Un mot oublié

Mamihlapinatapai est le nom donné au Temple imaginé pour Nowhere 2020. C’est un mot Yagan, un langage disparu provenant de la Terre de Feu, qui décrit un désir partagé entre deux personnes, chacune espérant que l'autre va prendre l'initiative.

Au coeur de Nowhere, deux vagues de bambous s'élancent depuis le sol pour se rejoindre dans les airs, tournant notre regard vers le ciel. Basé sur la spirale de Fibonacci, le design tend à nous reconnecter avec les géométries présentes dans notre environnement en formant un nouveau repère dans le Désert du Monegros .

Un Temple est un espace invitant à la reconnection. Un espace de retrouvailles avec soi et avec le “plus grand que soi”. Un environnement nous amenant à chercher au plus profond de nous-mêmes un sens aux choses qui nous échappent. Lorsque que l’on y trouve des réponses, le Temple  nous offre l’opportunité se détacher du passé et renaître.

Le Temple de la vie

Si le Temple de Burning Man est un lieu consacré au recueillement, au deuil et au souvenir, Mamihlapinatapai célèbre la vie, l’énergie qui nous permet de jouer avec les obstacles qui rythment notre cheminement physique et spirituel. Sa structure est formée de deux êtres qui s’embrassent sans se toucher et représente la sensualité d’une rencontre. Tout est là mais rien n’est encore fait.

Qui sommes nous ?

Pas d’installation artistique sans une équipe soudée ! Nous sommes un collectif dispersé sur la France, qui regroupe novices de la culture burner, burners aguerris, addicts du bambou, monteurs vidéo, architectes et une flopée d’autres talents. De Crème Brûlée (burn français) à Burning Man (burn USA), Youen Perhirin (aka O’Malley) et sa fantastique équipe ont participé à la construction de multiples structures incluant Galaxia (le Temple de Burning Man 2018), The Lighthouse (Nowhere 2018), The Temple of Tokamak (Borderlands 2019), Kaguya (structure de Katerpolar pour Crème Brûlée 2018), The Maze (Nowhere 2019).

Un Temple en bambou

Le bambou peut être transformé et mis en œuvre avec des outils accessibles sans expérience, ni énergie autre que celle de nos bras. La construction de ce Temple devient une opportunité de transmission de connaissances à travers des ateliers pédagogiques menés par des bamboutiers professionnels. Les participant.e.s  apprendront à fendre, à nouer, à fléchir les perches, laissant un matériau intègre et réutilisable. Le choix d’un matériau souple et léger est une porte ouverte à la co-création.

Interactivité avec la communauté

Toutes les étapes de ce projet impliquent la communauté, de sa conception à sa construction en passant par son financement, pour culminer par son utilisation rituelle au cours de Nowhere 2020 .

Les deux figures encore séparées seront unies par les liens que tisseront les membres de la communauté. Des cordes, de la laine, des tissus seront laissés à disposition pour relier les deux êtres. Des liens entre les deux structures, entre les expériences passées et le moment de création. Des liens entre les participant.e.s, en jouant avec les couleurs, les formes, les textures.

Participer à ce projet est une opportunité de cheminer avec d’autres, de rencontrer et surmonter de nouvelles épreuves avec créativité, et de grandir en partageant une expérience spirituelle communautaire.

Le Temple ne sera pas brûlé mais démonté et le matériau sacré sera réutilisé dans la construction de nouveaux lieux communautaires, participatifs et solidaires dans le respect du principe de gifting cher à la communauté des burners . Nous accueillons toute proposition de projets offrant une seconde vie aux bambous et permettant à Mamihlapinatapai de continuer à rayonner après Nowhere !
