Asian Leopard Specialist Society, is a non-profit organization established in 2010 in Tehran and it is dedicated to the Persian leopard conservation, research and management in Iran.

Current fundraising attempt is dedicated to the Dashtestan Persian Leopard Project which is being conducted in accordance to the Persian Leopard National Conservation and Management in Iran.

Dashtestan Persian Leopard Project have been started since October 2015 in southern part of the Persian leopard natural distribution in the southwest Asia where no other attempt had addressed the status of the leopard in this region. The project works on research and participatory conservation in a non-protected mountainous habitat. During the first phase of the project, we conducted systematic camera trapping surveys. We also established a participatory monitoring system of the leopard, its main preys and habitat together with local communities. To conduct this monitoring, our local assistants walk in priori identified trails regularly and as a result transit poachers are not allowed to illegally hunt wildlife species. As a result, currently the area is receiving some sort of participatory protection level. In Parallel, we conducted community based program to build capacity and empower the local community in and around 40 km distance of the main mountainous zone of the project site. This phase of the project has been funded by a local cement company in the region.

Currently, we are beginning the second phase of the project. We have already identified the threats, conservation needs and the priorities. According to the results from the first phase, we are about to start conservation actions directly addressing the leopards and their preys as well as the local community in the Persian leopard habitat in the region.

In this stage, we aim to make occupation opportunities for more local participants in terms of our monitoring efforts. We need to conduct participatory workshops together with continuing camera trapping. We also work on conservation priorities in the region such as compensation schemes and decreasing livestock-carnivore conflicts.

We thank you for your interest in our work to save the leopards in Dashtestan. You can follow up our efforts in society website, project page, Facebook, YouTube and regular reports and newsletters.
