Dona a La Colmena Cimarrona

Help us promote food sovereignty and health for Vieques!

Donate La Colmena Cimarrona

La Colmena Cimarrona is a non-profit community-based organization founded in 2018 on the island municipality of Vieques, Puerto Rico, with the mission of promoting food sovereignty and health for Vieques. La Colmena germinates spaces for the practice of agroecology, beekeeping, and solidarity economy.

In Puerto Rico, more than 80% of food is imported, making the archipelago a place of high food insecurity. This situation aggravates in the island municipality of Vieques, dependent on an unstable and inefficient ferry system for the transportation of food from the main island of Puerto Rico. When this food arrives in Vieques, it has already lost much of its nutritional value and is sold at an average price 30% higher. This has had a very serious impact on the health and economic income of the people of Vieques, who are already suffering from not having effective health services or a hospital on the island municipality.

Projects and initiatives to strengthen food sovereignty in Vieques are urgent. Access to agricultural land is essential for food security. However, there are more than 2,000 acres of land with agricultural capacity in the hands of the Administración de Terrenos (Land Administration) and the prices and leasing processes are not accessible to Vieques farmers.

In 2024, our goal is to continue implementing initiatives focused on promoting food sovereignty in Vieques.

You can help us reach the goal of raising $350,000 for these efforts

About La Colmena Cimarrona

Entirely led by women, La Colmena Cimarrona works to establish a support network among agroecological farmers in Vieques to promote economically and culturally viable production through 4 fundamental initiatives:

  • La Semillera is a farm guided by agroecological principles that works from and for equity and justice, developing educational and training programs in agroecology to promote economically and culturally viable agricultural production on the island municipality of Vieques.

  • La Colectiva Agrícola Viequense promotes agricultural production on the island municipality of Vieques among historically vulnerable agroecological farmers without a registered title, supporting a network of mutual support among members to increase our production capacity.

  • La Sambumbia brings fresh, healthy, local, and culturally appropriate products to the different communities of Vieques for an easy access to them.

  • El Panal facilitates spaces for coexistence and community training for the advancement of a culture of health in Vieques through popular education and good living, creating safe spaces regardless of race, skin color, religious beliefs, socioeconomic status, politics or gender identity, to heal injustices and inequalities in community.

How can you help?

With your donation you will help us achieve our goals:

  • Strengthen the organizational structure to achieve strategies that ensure formal land tenure for our permanence. Increasing our sowing, to flower and ensure sustainable agroecological production that works from equity. Without land there is no food sovereignty!
  • Implement collective strategies against the excessive increase in land costs in Vieques to ensure that viequenses have access, remain and cultivate their land, thus advancing food sovereignty.
  • Strengthen the work of the network of Vieques agricultural producers and our local market by reaching and training more agroecological producers.
  • Systematize popular education efforts to continue training viequense women and youth on health, social justice, and food sovereignty issues.
  • Continue addressing Climate Change challenges by generating initiatives for water conservation on the farms that participate in La Colectiva Agrícola Viequense.
  • Improve the seeding infrastructure in La Semillera.

Our achievements and activities

Vieques is a food desert due to the lack of rainfall we receive annually and the challenges that the lack of local food policies pose for food production. Among our most significant achievements and activities are:

  • Establishment of a 3-acre property for food production in La Semillera.
  • Beginning of an apiary on 1.5 acres of land in La Semillera.
  • Agroartisanal Market once a month during the high harvest season and Cajitas para la Soberanía Alimentaria (CSA): a membership system that allows families in Vieques to receive various foods produced in La Semillera and in the agricultural projects of the members of La Colectiva Agrícola Viequense.
  • Continuous support to 6 agroecological farms in Vieques, with which we share resources, materials, experiences, and knowledge to achieve the collective goal of achieving greater food sovereignty on the island.
  • Weekly brigades with volunteers to support the work of La Semillera.
  • Every first Thursday of the month, Las Girasolas: an educational initiative focused on plant-based health, product creation and cooking nutritious foods from local crops.
  • Support for the working group for decent housing in Vieques that arises from the Dialogue against displacement and gentrification in Vieques on the Día de Acción Comunitaria against displacement.
  • We have managed to adapt to the effects of Climate Change by integrating techniques to deal with droughts and improve water collection systems.
  • Creation of a community space on La Semillera where workshops on food sovereignty, compost, ointment making, healing plants, and other educational experiences are offered to promote equity and healing.
  • We co-facilitate spaces with groups like Acción Vincular to work on the body as a territory of struggle. Movement Laboratory(s) and martial arts classes have been worked on, among others.
  • Intensivo agrícola viequense held once a year in which residents are trained in agroecological production.
  • Las Abejas Reinas experiental camp for girls aged 12 to 16 from Vieques with the opportunity to learn about food sovereignty, Vieques' history, and sexual and reproductive health.
  • We maintain long-term collaborations with schools, educational programs, mental health programs and camps in Vieques to offer experiental experiences to students.
