Kids Now hasn't added a story.
Youth transitioning into high school face more negative issues today than ever before.
Coping with these pressures has never been so tough, especially for young teens dealing with cyberbullying, drugs, drinking, grades and sexual identity, to name a few, while they transition into high school. Teen anxiety and stress can significantly impact all youth regardless of socio-economic bracket and stability of family. They can de-rail even the most normal of teenagers towards bad choices leaving parents caught by surprise. The impacts for the teen, their families and the community can be devastating and long term - which is frustrated even more by how easily they could have been countered.
Here are a few facts:
- One in five young Canadians have a mental health issue.
- 46% of teenagers say they have "contemplated" suicide.
- Bullying occurs once every 7 minutes on the playground.
- Canada has the 9th highest rate of bullying in the 13-years-old category on a scale of 35 countries.
- The cost to our community can be measured by one teen in jail.
- Catching these issues at the young teen stage is by far the most impactful.

Real stories, real results
Since 1999, we’ve mentored over 18,000 kids and we're not stopping!
Here are a few of our success stories:
Casimir Legrand was a Kids Now participant in 2007, and is now the Chair of the Kids Now Youth Advisory Council!
“Kids Now allowed me to explore my leadership potential,
inspiring self-confidence and confirming that my future
aspirations might be possible. Specifically, the program
provided a safe environment for me to speak my mind, providing a
platform that allowed me to consider significant social issues
and unpack certain pressures I faced during middle school. I
learned that it was not that difficult to interact with students
I did not know and collaborate with them to achieve a common
goal. I got to build confidence in teamwork and try out conflict
resolution strategies.”
Meera Mahendrian was a Kids Now participant in 2009, and is now giving back and is a a Kids Now mentor! Paula Sanchez, Director of National Programs and mentor for over 10 years was her mentor!
“Many of the lessons I learned at Kids Now followed me into
my high school and university career. When faced with
difficult and stressful situations, I often thought back to
the core teachings of Kids Now and recalled steps we had
practiced to handle such challenges life often presents. When
I made the especially challenging transition to university and
was presented with tons of exams, a new schedule and a
rigorous program, I was able to cope thanks to my excellent
goal setting skills, a skill I had acquired solely because of
my time with Kids Now.”
