Inner Garden/Inner Peace
The Inner Garden/Inner Peace project will provide a restorative garden for residents living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside who are experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness. A new inner courtyard garden will create a rare oasis and sanctuary for healing, comfort and peace for the residents of Powell Place emergency shelter for women and Santiago Lodge, a home for those living with mental health issues.
The Inner Garden/Inner Peace project is an exciting opportunity to create a garden that is functional yet therapeutic, provide safe spaces, foster connections, and serve the needs of the residents.
In addition to creating a place of solace and relaxation where residents and staff can destress, the garden will provide space to host outdoor community events such as resident BBQ’s, yoga, meditation, and cultural and social events.
Powell Place serves women living with the intersecting challenges of violence, abuse, poverty, mental illness, and addiction. Our innovative, strengths-based approach encourages women to make their own choices and supports them as they reach toward their goals. Powell Place is the first women-only shelter in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. It houses 52 women.
Santiago Lodge provides a home and on-site support for 25 individuals with chronic mental health challenges who are on fixed or low-incomes with a stable home in the Downtown Eastside. Since 1975, Santiago Lodge has provided individuals with permanent homes, access to an on-site Licensed Practical Nurse, and a variety of community support that promote health, recovery, social inclusion, and independence.
