COVID-19 and the stay-in-place orders that were created in response to the pandemic have devastated the tourist-driven economy of La Peñita and its surrounding pueblos. Many families have lost their incomes and their ability to provide for themselves and their children.

My name is Travis, I’m a US citizen that lives part time in Mexico, and I’m a volunteer in the effort to keep this community afloat. The organizers of La Peñita’s humanitarian response to COVID-19 are my friends Cesar Perez Novoa and his wife, Angela Caves.

The two of them and the team they have created (I’ll just say we) are distributing

• Weekly supply packages of basic groceries to families in need
• Diapers and baby formula to affected families with children
• Medications to people with diabetes and high blood pressure
• Gas for homes

And we are operating 11 soup kitchens in the following areas:

2. La Peñita (Las Rosas Colony)
3. La Peñita (Lázaro Cárdenas)
4. Colonia Paraiso Escondido (Jeros)
5. Colonia Paraiso Escondido (Lopez)
6. Rincon de Guayabitos
7. Los Ayala
8. El Monteón
9. La Lima
10. Zacualpan
11. La Colmena

Right now, we are serving over 11,000 plates a day and everyday more people come.
