Ali Bruce hasn't added a story.
Last year I fell in love with Aprons for Gloves, and the competition known as The Restaurant Rumble changed my life forever.
I no longer belive that I "can't" do anything, and I no longer call myself fat or lazy. After this experience I have tried all the athletic things that I had been afraid to try in the past.
I now believe that being an athlete comes from within, it comes from believing that you can change for the better while still being yourself, you can fight to be anyone, or any boxer that you want to be. It doesn't matter what you look like when your doing something, or how tall you are, or big or how small you are, boxing accepts everyone who is willing to work hard, everyone can push themselves in Aprons for Gloves.
The new Eastside boxing gym has become an important part of my life, I am constantly inspired by people and participants and the volunteers and coaches that make this what it is.
The gym is still getting on its feet and a positive community is already forming, I have made the best friends and have been inspired to make art and grow as a person, soon the gym will be starting programs with these orgranizations:
This year we are working with 2 women's programs:
1 - newSTART, giving support via WorkBC to women who have experienced domestic abuse. In helping women build their self-confidence and independence (which happens collectively with peer support and through the challenges of their lives), the program and projects such as the partnership with Eastside Boxing, we can truly improve lives and offer a hand up.
2 - Rainer Women’s Supportive Housing. Eastside Boxing runs a weekly women’s-only boxer-fit program that allows a safe space for newSTART participants to exercise and learn basic boxing skills under the guidance of other female boxers.
Youth Program:
NICCSS- Vancouver Roving Leaders Program. Eastside Boxing runs a free after school boxing program 3 times a week. This program is facilitated by head coach Dave Shuck and other ESB boxer mentors. ESB works with NICCSS case workers to help introduce youth participants to exercise and a variety of life skills through mentorship and relationship building.
LASTLY, I would love to get back in that ring, I WANT TO TRAIN! I WANT TO FIGHT! stay tuned for info on upcoming fundraisers, parties, and some art and beer rewards for my campaign,
Let's Rumble,
Ali Bruce
