Haley Durchschlag hasn't added a story.
Many of you know that I spent most of this winter in Uganda adopting my two sons, Emmanuel and Martin. During my stay in Uganda I visited a town called Jinja where I had the previlage to meet and make friends with the girls at Mirembe Cottage and their acting father, Daniel. Daniel was himself an orphan and starting out as an artist when he started a home for street girls. Mirembe Cottage is currently the only home for girls in the entire country focusing on helping girls who have been sold into prostitution or forced labor. Daniel takes in girls needing refuge and provides them a home, food and education. The girls have learned to sew and bead as a source of income for the home but funding is still short and they are in need of donations. Girls are also available to sponsor if someone is willing to give monthly support. This money would go to her education and housing expenses.
I also had the privilege to meet a medical student named Tim during my time in Kampala. Tim and his friends have been doing mission work out on the island of Kalangala, a small remote island outside of Entebbe since high school. These islands have some of the highest rates of HIV in the entire country and lack of family planning is a huge issue. Tim and his friends have worked to bring medicine and contraception to the people of this island. They have even started a farming program on the island to help the people become self sustaining and financially independent. I was lucky to have the experience of going to the island myself and meeting the people Tim and his friends serve. They are a wonderful community of people trying to overcome abject poverty and lack of opportunity. Tim is currently trying to raise $1,600 for a sanitation system for the island and $8,000 for a van. The van would be used as a source of income for the island so that is could fund a family planning and maternal health clinic.
All of these projects will be over seen by me during my trips back to the country and I will be posting updates and videos to facebook so that everyone can see who their money is going to help. I also be posting albums to facebook documenting my time in Africa working with these great organizations. Many of us think we don't have the money to donate but even $5.00 goes a long way in Uganda and is very appreciated by the people recieving it. If there are any questions about donations please feel free to message me on facebook. Thank you to everyone for your support and thank you to all my Ugandan friends for taking such good care of me during my time in Africa!
