This page is designed to help support Leonardo da Vinci JMZ and his owner/trainer Matt Eagan in the quest to compete at the Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Championships.
Leonardo da Vinci JMZ is an American bred 2010 Hanoverian gelding (Locksley I x Dacaprio x Lemon xx), bred by Kate Landon. Leo is trained Matt Eagan and co-owned by Matt and Jill Todd, DVM.
Leo shows three exceptional well balanced gaits for a young horse. He is extremely workmanlike under saddle and has an affinity to work and learn new skills, Leo shows exceptional promise as a USEF Four Year Old Young Horse competitor. Leo is a future FEI star in the making.
In their short time together, Leo and Matt have already impressed international clinicians Conrad Schumacher, Anne Gribbons and Henrik Johansen. 2014 will be Leo’s first season showing and we are excited for what the future holds.
Leo and Matt’s goals for the 2014 season:
- Develop, in a systematic method, Leo into a fundamentally sound young horse that is happy and willing in his work
- Travel to CA for the month of May to train with David Wilson of W Farms
- Compete at the Dressage at Flintridge Show and Beaujolais Dressage Show to qualify for the Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Championships
- Compete and aim for a high finish at the Markel/USEF Young Horse Championship
- Most of all, have fun and enjoy the ride
From Matt:
"Leo is by far the most talented horse I have worked with. Leo has the potential to be a superstar dressage horse. To begin our journey we are embarking on a campaign this season that will take us to California for training and showing in May. From that point we will prepare to compete at the Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Championships in August.
Previously, I have been fortunate to have owners who supported me by having me train and show their respective horses. This time, I am a taking my own horse and thus will shoulder all of the financial obligations. Because of the expesnive nature of showing dressage, I am looking for assistance to help Leo and me reach our dreams.
I grew up in Seattle and moved back to the area 6 years ago. Since I was a kid I rooted for the Seattle Seahawks. This past season they won their first Superbowl with the mantra "Why Not Us?". While watching their Superbowl run, I thought to myself, "Why Not Leo and Me?". Each morning when I get to the barn, I walk down to Leo’s stall, pat him on his head and say to him “Why Not Us?”.
In our short time together Leo and I have laid down the foundation to a great partnership and it keeps getting stronger. He and I work together as cooperative teammates and I have this sense that with the hard work and dedication that we put in everyday that something truly great will happen to us; not only for this season but for future seasons as well."
Your generous donation will help with Leo and Matt's travel, training, lodging, boarding, and showing costs as we stive to have Leo be one of the best 4 year old horses in the US in 2014. As of March, $8,000 in private donations have been raised to send Leo and Matt to train and show in California.
More information about Leo can be found at www.leodressagehorse.com.
