While Mom's funeral was very very beautiful, as she deserved, we are now finding that the insurance did not quite cover everything, even though the flowers and such were out of pocket. The plan was to make sure insurance covered her service and then have enough left to pay for her headstone, which will be right next to our Dad's Navy headstone. Unfortunately things are not working out as planned and regretfully we have to ask for assistance. Can you please help us give our Mom the respect and peace she deserves and give our family some peace of mind during this awful, emotional time?
The long version....ย
We lost Mom pretty suddenly and traumatically. She had some breathing problems and was recently put on oxygen. She kept complaining that it never felt like she was getting enough. Then the falling started. For about a week my brother, sister and once my daughter helped pick her up. She was a stubborn lady, said she was too tired to go to Dr. My sister ended up calling 911 for her one night. They said they would keep her overnight to try to get her oxygen levels up and stable. There were no beds available so she spent the night in the ER. The next day she was transferred upstairs, only to find out she would be going to ICU because of oxygen, where she spent her last Thanksgiving. She was put on a bipap machine at 100% oxygen. They did get her to 70% a few times but it didn't last. In the mean time they did a chest CT and found she had two masses in her right lung. Then we were told there was one in the left one, also. The doctors said a biopsy would kill her and they were sure it was cancer. She continued getting weaker, but could still communicate and knew what was happening. On Nov 28th my brother, sister and I were called in for a meeting with doctors. I had an awful feeling in my gut that it was bad. And it was. We were basically told that she would not survive. They could intubate her, but that chances were she would never survive breathing on her own. The masses were blocking her airways. And even if she was able to breathe on her own, the cancer would kill her. So, we had to make the horrible, heartbreaking decision to let them give her meds to make her comfortable and take off her oxygen. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, aside from losing our 13 years old daughter 9 years ago. No one is ready to lose a parent. But when you have to consciously make that choice... And watch her go... It's heart wrenching.
We got her life insurance policies found and talked to funeral home. We made basic choices that were still very beautiful for our Mom. We knew there wasn't much money. Mom was on disability, fixed income, and could not afford much. We thought that there would be enough to cover her graveside service and viewing. We were told the funeral home would take care of insurance. We did not know there was a fee. So here we are, now.. Having just buried our Mother during the holiday season and we can't cover her bill, let alone put a headstone for her. I know a headstone seems like the least of our worries, but our Mom lost an infant daughter many years ago, our sister, and they were never able to raise the money to get her one. We're so afraid of that happening with our Mom.
I know Christmas is approaching. I know money is tight. But any amount will help. If you can't help, please share. God bless all of you and we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Thank you for your time ๐

One last thing... She took care of people all her life. Her kids, grandchildren, nieces and their children, her own Mom, my brother when he was dying of lung cancer. Always giving. That is why we are working so hard to take care of this for her. Thank you, again ๐๐๐
