Hedda and Angelika are two of the most adorable, kind hearted little
chickens around. Despite having gone through hell in their first
eighteen months of life, and only experiencing suffering and pain as
egglayers in the industry. Once in a safe environment, quickly found a
way to trust their new human and they are both such loving little
souls who both love snuggles more than anything else in this
world.
Today, January 5th, should have been a day of celebration
for us, as this is the date they came to me from the egg industry four
years ago. But instead of celebrating, there is sadness and fear and
pain again, because Hedda and Angelika have both fallen very sick, and
we need your help!
Angelika hasn't been feeling herself since
before Christmas. She was a quick trip to the vet for a check-up on
December 23rd, but nothing alarming was found at that stage. Then on
Wednesday evening, January 1st, I found that she had developed a
serious condition called crop stasis. This is when the crop, that is
supposed to churn the food, stops working and fills up with undigested
foods. A deadly ailment if not corrected quickly. So the next day, we
took the long drive to the main city and an avian specialist there who
emptied Angelika's crop and rinsed it out. He checked her for
underlying issues (as it often is when crop stasis occurs), but
couldn't find any reason why she had developed this condition, and she
was given medication for the next five days. Unfortunately, there must
be an underlaying issue after all, because, despite having her crop
emptied on Wednesday, only having soft food (porridge) and being on
her medication, Angelika's crop has now filled up again, and there is
no feces coming out. She's feeling very poorly, sprucing her feathers,
standing around looking sad with her head hanging. She's not even
comfortable enough to lay down to sleep at night, but will stand all
night long, I guess, because of the pressure from the crop when she
lays down.
Hedda was diagnosed with heart failior a few months back, and
put on medication for this, but even on medication, she's not making
the progress that I expected and hoped for her, and in the last weeks,
her condition seems to have deteriorated instead. She needs another
trip to the vet, but all our funds have, once again, run completely dry.
These girls have come such a long way. They have been through so
much and now have a life they deserve and love. Please help them so
they can continue enjoying life, being loved and cared for.
I
don't know exactly what their vetcare will cost, but I've never left
the veterinarians office without paying at least 600-700 dollars for
each of my birds, so I'm setting the goal for 1400 USD right now and
I might adjust that number once I've spoken to the vet tomorro, Monday.
If you can, please consider donating to these precious girls,
and if you can't please consider sharing this fundraiser.
