Sheldon Vong hasn't added a story.
Hi everyone!
My name is Sheldon and I am participating in the 8th annual Aprons for Gloves competition. I will be fundraising money for the Downtown East Side, while training every week until the end of August to compete in the boxing ring. I've spent my entire life in East Vancouver; everything from going to school, playing ice hockey, and volunteering. I love this part of the city, which is an amazing community filled with rich history, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. This community has given me opportunities to succeed in many ways, and now its my turn to give back!
I joined the beginner class at Eastside Boxing Club (ESB) with no experience in fighting (except with my brothers, but isn't that what siblings are for?!), and I've never looked back. The support that the staff provide in the gym is top notch, but after finding out more on what impact this club has in the community, it made me want to join this amazing cause even more. The mission at ESB is to help improve quality of life, while building a safe environment within the community through boxing. There are 4 non for profit programs that ESB runs:
1) Young adults class for youth working to improve their mental health
2) Free self-defence series for female-identified, and all members of LGBTTQQ2S
3) Moms and Tots Boxing Program
4) After-school boxing program for at-risk youth
The after-school program is what resonates with me the most, as I have worked in a very similar program with ice hockey. This program gives the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of boxing from trained professionals, all for free. On top of the free classes, ESB also offers free food, clothing/gear, support with other community outreach programs, healthcare, tutors, and peer-leadership programs. When I was helping out with a similar program through ice hockey, I was able to witness some students who have never laced up hockey skates, who ended up playing at a Junior's level of hockey (a level I was never able to reach, despite me playing for over 15 years!). Now, I am participating in Aprons for Gloves to make an impact in the community through boxing, the same way I did with ice hockey.
If you would like to help me reach my fundraising goal, you can do so through this page! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I hope to see you all August 20th at the Commodore Ballroom and watch me get beat up!
Thanks!
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2019
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
