The ProblemLabour Trafficking is one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world. Here in Canada, this crime takes place daily in our biggest cities and our smallest towns. As you read these words, an estimated 50 million people are living in slavery. Stripped of their safety, dignity and liberty. This is nearly 1 in 150 humans. Who We Are
International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global organization that protects people in poverty from violence. We partner with local authorities and justice systems in 33 program offices across 19 countries to build safe communities where all are protected from labour trafficking, violence against women and children, and police abuse of power. Together, we strengthen justice systems to respond to violence and create lasting safety.
Our Solution
Because of the severity of the crime, traffickers, pimps and others who profit from the sexual exploitation of women and children are particularly deterred by law enforcement action.
When the likelihood of serving serious jail time and paying significant financial damages increases, the potential financial rewards are no longer worth the high risk and traffickers change their behaviour. This results in safe communities where women and children can live in safety and freedom because they are dramatically less likely to be trafficked.
IJM combats labour trafficking in Latin America, Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa.
Our goal is to take holistic action towards building a safer future by preventing the crime from happening in the first place.
