To date, with the help of the community, CCIA has placed over 2,000 culturally affirming books (books that allow African-American children to see themselves represented positively) into 15 Title I elementary school libraries. This year, we have babies at three schools, and one youth literacy center that are anxiously awaiting 100 books each! Reading is the foundation of learning. On the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress, only 18 percent of African-American fourth-graders were proficient in reading. There is a literacy gap among African-American children and one of the major contributing factors is a lack of texts that are relevant to the experiences of African-American youth. Your contribution helps us provide 100 books to each school. We need your contribution now to get these books to our babies!
