RSVPS: Riding to Support Veterans’ Programs and Services
Mission/Goal: To raise $10,000 through donations to support veterans’ services and programs. (See list below.)
Project: Beginning May 1st, 2015, Cindy (54) and Joseph Quinones (67) will begin a 4,075 mile bicycle ride across the United States.
Starting in Yorktown, Virginia, Cindy and Joseph will follow the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail established in 1976 by Adventure Cycling to commemorate the American Bicentennial. The couple plans on riding an average of 52 miles (two complete marathons) a day over the course of three months, ending their trek in August at Lincoln City, Oregon.
Inspiration: We know from personal experience that our veterans, discharged and currently serving, need all the support we can provide. Joseph is himself a veteran (Vietnam Era). Cindy has a son who served a tour in Iraq and another son who is currently an active duty Marine.
What We Are Asking of You: Cindy and Joseph are asking people to donate 1cent per mile, or $40.00 total (½ cent per mile is fine), in support of their fundraising project. We need 250 sponsors to meet our goal of $10,000.
Dispersal of Funds: Contributions raised will go to the Elk’s National Veteran’s Service Commission/Wounded Warrior Projects, Camp Courage and Honor Flight Network. These are the primary recipients, there may be others.
Elks National Veteran’s Service Commission/The Wounded Warrior Project During the 2009 Elks Convention the membership voted to partner with the Wounded Warrior project to provide services to veterans. By that vote the Elks National Veterans Service Commission/Wounded Warrior Project was launched. This partnership continues to this day.
Elk’s Veteran’s Service Commission: Elk’s Pledge : " So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them." Since 1917, hundreds of thousands of Elks and their families have given generously of their time, energy and resources to enhance the lives of veterans.
The Wounded Warrior Project is a non-profit organization created by and for wounded veterans. Their goal is to provide assistance to veterans who were wounded, both physically and/or psychologically, in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Wounded Warrior Project provides assistance and counseling to aid in a wounded soldier’s return to civilian life.
The Camp Courage Vision - to reach as many Marines as possible through the outreach of our care package projects in an effort to express our sincerest appreciation for their selfless choice to serve our great nation.
Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.
