"First I was a stallion, then I became a gelding, then I became a Mayor (mare). Now I am a Member (MP) ..Ladies and gentleman of the House, I believe I have come the full circle. "
-- MP Georgina Beyer, from her maiden speech, New Zealand Parliament
Georgina Beyer, the charismatic star of the documentary Georgie Girl, is suffering from end-stage chronic renal failure. The world’s first ‘out transsexual’ to be elected to public office, Georgina, who is of Maori (indigenous) descent, has been an inspiration to many. She is an example of a courageous individual who overcame adversity, marginalization and discrimination.

All profits, outside a small amount to cover Occasional Production's admin costs, will go directly to Georgina's medical expenses. She is living on a sickness benefit and has chosen to administer her dialysis herself in her small flat -- four times a day.
ABOUT THE FILM
The film Georgie Girl traces Georgina's colourful pathway through life. Born George, she was raised on a farm by a stern grandfather, learning to fish and shoot. In her late teens she discovers the LBGT scene in 70s and 80s Wellington (and mentored by the remarkable late Carmen Rupa) and becomes for a time, a sex-worker and drug user. Taking the unusual step of leaving the city, she achieves rapid ascendency, taken to the heart of a small (conservative) rural town, elected first as a local councillor, then as mayor of Carterton and finally in 1999 as a Member of Parliament, elected into national office under a Labour Government headed by Helen Clark. Georgina never forgets her past however and works hard as an elected official to introduce progressive legislation -- including the Prostitution Reform Act which stops the criminalization of sex-workers.
The film, released in 2002, was highly successful, winning over 15 awards at international film festivals -- including in Aotearoa New Zealand, the US, Australia, Canada and the UK and Russia (the festival it was scheduled into had its theatre burned down, but they relocated and two years later, Georgie Girl won an award at the event). The feature documentary also screened on television world wide: POV/PBS, Channel 4 (UK), SBS, CBC and TVNZ amongst others.
This re-release is timely and any support for Georgina during her ordeal will be much appreciated! She is unwell, but trying to keep her spirits up.
Thanks to Peter (co-director), Catherine, Eric, Craig -- all of whom originally worked on the film; to TVNZ, New Zealand on Air, the Sundance Documentary Fund and the University of Auckland who helped fund it; and to Next Technology who digitised the film for this campaign.
