Emmalee Zupo hasn't added a story.
This is my puppy Cherry. She is just now 8 weeks old, and has
suffered from a very bad dog bite from another dog who was,
unfortunately, much, much bigger than her.
The bite broke the bone around her eye and has completely
dislocated her jaw. On top of that, when the dog let her go, she
lunged backwards into a wall, giving her some head trauma.
Upon arriving at the animal hospital -- the Animal Emergency and
Pet Care Clinic of Boone, NC -- we were told at first that her jaw was
the only main issue. However, within minutes, we were facing very
serious concerns about brain damage. The doctor assisting us told us
that Cherry may lose her ability to function as a normal dog. At one
point, we were advised to euthanize her. We were told that even if
Cherry made it through her head trauma, she would be facing a major,
complicated surgery for her jaw that only a specialist could complete.
At the recommended facility, the estimate for such a surgery ranged
from $2,500 to $4,500. We were also advised that we might have to
drive her immediately to Winston to have an MRI performed, which would
cost an additional $1,200 -- but they were unsure if she would even
make it for the hour and a half drive.
Despite their recommendation to euthanize Cherry, I decided to
give her a chance. They administered heavy sedation and medication to
help subdue the swelling and build up of blood around her brain. So
far, my decision has yielded positive results.
I received a call the next morning, telling me that Cherry had
started walking on her own and that, from the looks of it, the
medication was helping her. I went to visit her that morning, and
though she didn't really look great, she wagged her tail as soon as
she saw me -- something the doctor had said she hadn't done since
she'd been there. Otherwise, she was pretty lethargic. I brought her a
soft toy to cuddle up to and, upon returning in the afternoon, was
told she had been sleeping with her head on the toy the entire day.
When I visited her again in the afternoon, she seemed even more
alert than before. She not only wagged her tail, but she stood up to
greet me and cuddled up into my arms. I brought her a scarf of mine so
she could have something with my scent, and she immediately curled up
into it.
Even though Cherry is doing better, she is not out of the woods
yet. Presently, she is unable to eat -- she can barely open her mouth.
I've been told that as soon as she is released she will have to
undergo surgery so that she can eat on her own. I've also been told
that I could forego the surgery, however, Cherry would suffer from
chronic pain for the rest of her life, the presence of bone disease in
her jaw along with the possibility of losing teeth and would continue
to have trouble eating for an indefinite amount of time.
As of right now, her bills have surpassed $1,000, with an
additional $170 for every night that she spends hospitalized. I am
looking into specialists who can perform her surgery now, but know
that, no matter what, the surgery is going to be expensive. And since
the surgery is so complicated, and can only be performed by a
specialist, I have to consider the fact that Cherry may have to
undergo more than one surgery depending on how the first one goes.
Please, please help me save my puppy! I am trying my best to
cover her bills and despite the fact that I work two jobs, I just do
not make enough money. I applied for pet care credit and received $500
-- an amount I was told was meager and really only covers the other
half of her cost at the hospital.
Please donate if you can! Help spread the word and help me give
this puppy a chance to get better! She is the sweetest puppy and such
a good girl. She's just a baby, and I don't want her to suffer. She's
getting better all the time, and I will be posting pictures and
updates on her progress as she heals.
Thank you so much for your consideration! I appreciate every
ounce of help I can get!
