Finding Home
When I arrived at Morija Arts Centre and sat on the front steps of Maeder House Gallery that first day, how was I to know that the place would steal my heart? I knew from the first that it had captured my interest, and I fervently hoped that it would capture my time, and bring fruit from my hands. Morija Arts Centre pulled me across the ocean twice, when I didn’t know how I would make my way back to Lesotho, Morija Arts Centre whispered to me and pushed me to make a plan.
Two and a half years later, Morija is my home and the Arts Centre is at the centre of my life. Here, I am elated, entangled, educated, and encouraged by the best group of people I could ever have asked for. Along for the adventure are 9 other artist-volunteers from near and far, and together we contribute to the magic of Morija Arts Centre.
THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to our 2019 GoFundMe Campaign!
Sincerely,
Teyana Neufeld
Morija Arts Centre Coordinator
Things We Achieved in 2019 with YOUR Help:
-Our team of artist-volunteers grew from 3 to 10!
-Built an Art Education Program in partnership with 4 local schools. Our ArtReach Program takes volunteers into local schools to aid teachers in delivering the new art curriculum. We pair this in-school approach with an after-school ArtClub where children have another opportunity to express themselves and explore different media outside the classroom. We had a total of 5 artist-volunteers working with 11 teachers in 3 primary schools, reaching a pool of 385 students. In 2020 we aim to grow these programs, train new volunteers and ultimately be able to reach more teachers across the community. To learn more, click here.
-Hosted 6 Tiny Gallery Concerts. Our team of 10 artist-volunteers hosted 6 events, featuring 35 performers (made up of poets, musicians and visual artists), attracting a total number of 326 audience members!! We also include in each event: a Skill Share, an Artist Talk, and a Talk Show where we engage the audience on a variety of pressing issues facing artists in Lesotho. Through these events we have branded Morija Arts Centre as a hub for Art, discussion and growth. Check out the amazing performances here.
-Opened a Brand New Textile Studio – This was my personal passion project, and I can’t describe the joy it is to work and play in a fully functioning textile studio. I designed and built 4 floor looms from local materials, collected weaving yarns (such as cotton, wool, and mohair) and installed a fully functioning Natural Dye kitchen. We are already using the new studio regularly, and are launching Weaving Courses early in 2020.
Things We Want to Achieve in 2020
2019 was all about strengthening our community. Now we are working on making the space more welcoming for our growing family.
- Implement Business Development programming We want to help artist-makers develop their businesses and take them to the next step. Whether this means working on up-skilling, product development, marketing, or branding: we want to provide them with information, new skills and support. We aim to host a series of group workshops, paired with individual consultations with creators who want to improve their impact, visibility, and customer base.
- Makeover of Gallery + Studio Spaces: The floor in both these spaces are dirt and not very practical for the onslaught of humans, heavy objects, little feet and urgent art events it is asked to put up with. We feel we could use the space better if the floor was more resilient and easier to clean.
1) Maeder House Gallery (the oldest standing building in Lesotho) is our gallery/shop where we sell a carefully crafted collection of locally hand-made items and artworks. We are open 6 days a week. It also serves as the performance space during our Tiny Gallery Concerts.
2) The Studio – a multi use space that holds our Art Library, individual artist work benches, ceramics studio, carpentry studio, general art supplies and creative storage;
We do our best to measure the impact we have on our community. But it’s true that some effects are less tangible. You can’t measure the feeling of endless possibility I feel when I work in these studio spaces, how ideas trip over themselves in my excitement to create. There is no currency for the eagerness with which our ArtClub kids come running into the Centre; no way to see from our facebook page the progress we see from week to week, month to month, season to season. Morija Arts Centre is the only one of its kind in Lesotho. Help us change more lives by making the pursuit of art more possible for a growing community of people.
