THE PUPPY RESCUE MISSION hasn't added a story.
Meet Sierra of Afghanistan~
"Hi my name is Tommy I am a Marine Corps Veteran that served 5 years on Active Duty. I’m currently posted in southern Afghanistan. I work in an austere location away from my family & friends. I have been deployed for approximately 9 months. Around my 6 month my mark is when I had the pleasure of meeting 3 beautiful puppies. We were absolutely delighted at their naturally kind demeanor and friendly disposition for such a hostile environment. Without thinking my comrades and I welcomed and nourished the rough looking pups. We tried to avoid naming the pups for as long as we could because the majority of dogs do not live long in this region. Eventually we decided to give them temporary names in order to save them.
The biggest pup is Sierra, she is all brown/black around the eyes, Sierra is the big sister and guardian for her younger brother and sister. The second biggest is Chubby, she is very easy going loves to eat, take naps and to wrestle with her brother and sister. Chubby has mixed coat of black/brown and white. The smallest is Piggy, our one male. We found Piggy with his ears and tail cut off as he was being groomed by the Afghan soldiers to be a fighting dog. Piggy is all white and with black around his eyes.
The dogs are located in a dangerous area and we don’t always have access to see them. But, when we do come around the dogs can hear our truck before we even pull-in. By the time we climb out of the back of our truck all 3 of them are sitting nicely, tails wagging directly under our hatchback. We then climb down to meet our furry friends and are always greeted with kisses and excitement that can hardly be contained. We always bring food with us, otherwise the dogs will not eat.
As we are setting up for the day our 3 dogs follow us around like lost puppies, because they really are. With curiosity I’ve only seen matched by my 3 year old God son, the pups like to be in the middle of any sort of project we’re working on.
Dog fighting is common in this region of Afghanistan. Piggy was being raised to be a fighter, and his sisters will not be fed. If the females do live long enough they will have to see their puppies taken from them, to also be raised as fighters. We safekeep the dogs as best we can but the only way they will truly be safe is with loving families back home.
At this point in the story you may be thinking “What a nice thing these young men are doing for these puppies”. However that would only be half the story… Our relationship with these dogs is beneficial on both sides. The hardship of this 18 years war catches all of us at some point. Of my group of comrades- we’ve all been to this war more than once. For me in total- this is my 15th month of duty in Afghanistan. These puppies aren’t just pets to us, but reminders of the innocence and beauty we left home to protect. On some days you forget why you came, and feel as if home is forever and a day away. Our loyal companions remind us why we came and for the short bits of time I spend with them, I feel home again.
When I transition back to everyday life I want to remember the happiest parts of my tours here. I want to drive my truck down home-town roads, look to my right and see my best friend wagging his tail. I want to remember the good times, instead of wonder- what else I could’ve done with my time here.
For all of this, I am asking for your assistance to save at least one of these dogs. Thank you for your time and God bless."
Thank You Men and Women for your service to our country. It is because of your dedication that we live in The Land of the Free, Because of the Brave. Paw Salute!
