Myesha Henderson hasn't added a story.
Hey Everyone!
For those who don't know me, my name is Myesha Henderson and I'm a rising Senior Jazz Studies-Voice Major at Howard University in Washington, DC, hailing from Milwaukee, WI. In my time at the Mecca, I have definitely been on a wild and unforgettable journey that has taught me so much about myself along the way. A few of these distinct yet major revelations have prompted a refinement in my passions and goals as an artist. Prompted by a visit from South African jazz band "Kesivan and the Lights" in my Sophomore 'Jazz History' class, I decided I would make my way to South Africa. My goal since has been and is to understand the music, languages, culture, and history of this Country with such a rich story that mirrors, in many ways, the Black American experience.
This April, I was awarded the Fulbright-Hayes Group Project Abroad Scholarship to travel through South Africa, from June to August. Driving along KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces, we will explore Zulu Religious Sites, Clothing and Beading Museums, Durban historical sites, Traditional Medicine Forests, as well as visit Zulu Royal Family at KwaNongoma in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The Program is comprised of six components:
- Coursework (classroom instruction)
- Lecture Seminars
- Home stays in the Communities
- Tours to Cultural/Historical Sites
- Hands-on Workshops
- Outreach Programs
Over the course of these 2 months, Zulu language, music, dance, tradition, and history should be thoroughly incorporated into our experience and will be expressed through our academic essays'.
Granting from the Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship covers:
- International travel to and from Durban, South Africa from New York City or any other designated U.S. departure airport
- Overseas Tuition
- Accommodation and food for the duration for the program
- Program-related transportation in South Africa
- Educational materials distributed during the program
What this scholarship will NOT cover is:
- Program Fee of $800 to cover administrative expenses in the United States
- Local travel from the participants’ homes to New York City, John F. Kennedy Airport and return after the program. (Participants are advised to seek funding support from their institutions, academic departments, etc. for Program Fee and local travel)
- Mandatory health insurance for the summer abroad in South Africa
- Passport and visa fees
- Inoculations and other health-care expenses related to travel
- Travel done on the student’s own time and initiative in Southern Africa
- Personal shopping and gifts
I am asking that my friends, family, and loved ones DONATE to and SHARE this campaign to support my vision of traveling to South African. This means so much to me on a personal and professional level and I see myself being able to impact the world through the diverse breadth of knowledge South Africa has to offer. Every little bit will help and I thank you all for your time, consideration, and donations in advance.
