After a RUFF 2016, New Mexico Pets Alive (NMPA) is entering our 6th year anniversary in a most fortunate way. We've just learned we will be one of 4 organizations across the country (the only one in NM and the only animal welfare organization among a group of 4 beneficiaries) splitting a $10 million matching gift. The source of the matching gift is from the estate of a wonderful adopter who adopted a dog from New Mexico Pets Alive 4 years ago. With the adopter’s passing, the dog has gone to live with another member of the family and is doing well.
The $2.5 million matching gift comes in recognition of 6 years of 365 days of hard work with no regular paid staff saving the lives of over 3,400 shelter dogs and cats in NM that had no other lifesaving options (or preventing them for being impounded to begin with), extended personal sacrifices made by lead volunteers within the organization and scraping by day by day.
The gift will require us to continue using hard work, passion and creativity to secure the full $2.5 million gift. It will also require your continued community support and participation so that we may achieve the long term benefits for homeless dogs and cats in NM that this gift aims to provide.
The matching gift is being awarded to New Mexico Pets Alive specifically to “advance comprehensive No Kill companion animal welfare programming in New Mexico” and comes with very specific award and expenditure guidelines. In short, the gift must be used to:
- Establish New Mexico’s 1st PARVO PUPPY ICU program for homeless pups and the program must raise matching funds to be able to implement an educational program for other groups and agencies who may wish to learn the program.
- Expand NMPA’s PASS Program (Prevention & Alternatives to Shelter Surrender) and raise matching funds to be able to implement an educational program for other groups and agencies who may wish to learn the program.
- Hire a Development and Marketing Team to ensure ongoing financial sustainability
- Expand NMPA Adoption efforts and Post-Adoption support services and raise matching funds to grow the Foster to Adopt program. Foster to Adopt is not a typical No Kill program and requires considerably more resources to run than a direct adoption program but since the national pet adoption return rate averages close to 11% and NMPA’s adoption return rate is 1.5%, the gift requires NMPA to continue its Foster to Adopt adoption program in lieu of direct adoptions.
- Establish a formal NMPA Training & Behavior Program after many years of informally assisting homeless dogs with adoption prep while working to prevent dogs and cats that already have a home from being surrendered to a shelter. It also requires NMPA to raise matching funds to be able to implement an educational program for other groups and agencies who may wish to learn additional training and behavior program options.
- Complete 5,000 spay/neuter surgeries by the end of 2018 and then complete a minimum of 5,000 spay/neuter surgeries annually every year thereafter and raise matching funds
New Mexico Pets Alive first learned what was possible in terms of adoptions, parvo treatment for homeless pups and shelter surrender prevention for dogs and cats in 2011 when Melissa Roberts, NMPA Executive Director, attended the 1st American Pets Alive No Kill conference in Austin, TX, hosted by Austin Pets Alive. The conference as well as the generosity and subsequent rescue and medical program mentoring from Austin Pets Alive helped to make possible what NMPA programming is today.
“Successful efforts aren’t always what they appear to be on the surface. NMPA has been making ends meet by the skin of our teeth every month year after year without paid staff but we’re here celebrating 6 years of helping people and pets because of donors who want a more humane NM for homeless pets and because of those who were generous enough to teach us what they know; that includes Austin Pets Alive, Animal Farm Foundation, Longmont Humane Society, Dogs Playing for Life and Innovation Dog Training & Education.” – Melissa Roberts, Executive Director.
This SAVE a LIFE DRIVE is our annual fundraising campaign and began with a matching gift of $187,500. With the $2.5 matching gift addition, the community fundraising goal is now set at $2,687,500 bringing the total funding amount for homeless pets in NM to $5,375,000. By some standards $5 million may only cover the cost of one building but by New Mexico Pets Alive standards, that amount will cover 3 – 4 times the number of lives saved by that one building annually.
Homeless pets in New Mexico are the true beneficiaries of these matching gifts and the state stands to gain additional resources to combat homeless pet challenges via the increase in services for both people and pets that NMPA will be delivering. With a 200% increase in the demand for NMPA to provide comprehensive gap-filling No Kill programming to help both people and pets in NM, we ask you to be as generous as you can via this SAVE a LIFE DRIVE with your donation. You may also mail a donation and have it matched dollar for dollar to NMPA, PO Box 25661, Albuquerque, NM 87125. For those who prefer to donate via our regular website and for those who have set up monthly contributions via our website, your donations will still be counted here! Your donations will be added to this campign as an off-line contribution so that it will be matched.
At-risk pets waiting for our help say THANK YOU! for making a donation today in any amount that works for you. Your donation is tax-deductible.
If you cannot donate, you can still help in another BIG WAY by FOSTERING. We cannot make rescue commitments without BOTH funds and fosters. Doing either or both is literally saving a life of a dog or cat that deserves a 2nd chance. Please visit http://www.caninecafe.org/foster-a-pup for foster information.
You may also help by VOLUNTEERING! Whether you have an hour to give or 10 hours to give, we can use all the help we can get right now! Please visit http://www.caninecafe.org/volunteer to complete our online volunteer application and we will get back in touch with you via email asap.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Your Donations will Allow NMPA to Have a Tremendous Positive Impact on Homeless Pets in New Mexico in 2017 and beyond!!!
