Jim Harris hasn't added a story.
Jim Harris is known by most as one who, at one point or another, has dropped everything and helped anyone in need. He is the friend who you can call in the middle of the night to come pick you up; if your family is in the hospital, he will bring food, balloons, and silly cards to make you laugh. If your child is having a birthday party, he will spend hours decorating a cake, making super heroes out of fondant and candy.
Any opportunity Jim has to do something fun, he often tries to turn it in a way to helping others. His mother can take credit for this character trait, because she would often encourage him to use the blessings God has given him to help others. Jim is an accomplished musician, but it all started with his mother offering to buy him his first bass guitar on the condition he join the church choir. From there he has gone on to perform at several churches throughout Texas, and several fund raisers including the Wounded Warrior Project, Breast Cancer Research, and The Boot Campaign.
His biggest passion has always been helping others. Jim is currently a graduate student at St Edwards with a 4.0 GPA (though in light of the recent events had to drop his summer classes) pursuing a masters in counseling. Not only that, but for the past four years he has worked for various mental health agencies throughout Texas serving the severely mentally ill and homeless populations. He is also a certified mental health first aid instructor, educating the lay community on mental health resources, advocacy, and crisis intervention techniques. Participants of his mental health first aid courses have included Travis county sheriffs, University of Texas resident advisors, Hays county teachers, medical staff, librarians, and state employees. When asked where his motivation to be able to keep smiling while working in such a stressful field, he refers to his personal role model, Dr Hunter ‘Patch’ Adams (yes THAT Patch Adams), who has stressed the importance of humor and laughter when working with patients regardless of their illness or situation. There is always an opportunity to laugh.
It was his passion of helping others that led Jim to join the Guardians of the Children, a motorcycle group that focused on advocacy of children who are victims of physical or sexual abuse by spreading awareness to the public. The group has since separated from Guardians of the Children to expand their scope and involvement in the community to include working with children in the foster care system and veterans, which conflicted with the Guardians of the Children fidelity of only working with abuse cases. The group took him in as family and showered him with love and support. When his step father was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year, they were quick to not only be there for him emotionally, but to network his family with resources and connections in the Houston area which has led to his step father being accepted to an ALS specialty clinic, financial assistance with medications, and all the medical supplies he needs such as wheel chairs and leg braces.
Jim is often teased for having several names. Jim is his birth name used by close friends and family; Patrick is his catholic confirmation name which he chose by following the virtues of St Patrick; Bootless is his trail ride name having earned it by always losing his boots that fit just a little too big when he would ride horses with the General Zaragoza trail ride at the age of 8. But the name he is most proud of is his road name, the name he earned, SAINT. Upon joining Guardians of the Children, he was offered to choose a road name, basically a nick-name to go by, and after reflecting on his choices, he opted for Saint. Though he does not usually disclose the reason for his choice, the truth is that on many occasions while working with the severely mentally ill and homeless population, people who are often forgotten about by their families and communities, who are left with no one to help them, would refer to Jim as their ‘guardian angel’ and their ‘Saint.’
This situation is one that no one can prepare for. Those who know Jim are still in baffled that this could happen to someone like him. Please take the time to donate anything you can spare because every little bit helps. This endeavor is still not over, and in addition to student loans for a private graduate school, Jim is now burdened with the overwhelming legal fees associated with getting the help he requires to get through this situation. Jim has truly devoted his life to helping others, please give him the help he needs and deserves. Thank you.
