Steven Gray hasn't added a story.
Cameron is 18 years old. He just graduated high school and was scheduled to leave and serve his county in the army. He was going to be an IT specialist. He had plans to goto basic training, AIT and then return home next year and goto college for computers. After college he wanted to goto warrant officer school and become a warrant officer for the US Army.
Cameron has been in the Neuroscience ICU at VCU medical center in Richmond VA since August 22, 2014 when he was riding his scooter (moped) and was hit broadside by an SUV traveling an estimated 40mph. He suffered a broken humerus in his left arm and fractured his pelvis in 6 places. He has bad road rash over most of his body. However, the worst of his injuries is the brain injury that occurred. Even though he was wearing a proper helmet, he was thrown over 60' from the impact with the SUV. He suffered a severe contusion on his front right part of his brain and on the left side of his brain. Both contusions were bleeding and causing major swelling inside his head. They put a probe through his skull to measure the amount of pressure, which they call ICP (inner cranial pressure), in his head. The swelling could not be reduced so he had to have brain surgery to removed both sides of his skull to allow his brain to swell. We are being told he will be in this hospital for a year or more before being transferred to post acute brain injury rehab somewhere in VA.
A U.S. government study of 17 federally funded "model" traumatic-brain-injury research and treatment centers pegged the average daily cost of acute inpatient brain-trauma care at $8,034 and inpatient rehabilitation at $2,227. On average, the total cost per patient is $162,194 for initial brain-trauma care and $59,862 for inpatient rehabilitation, which lasts about two weeks.
Outpatient rehabilitation may last for weeks, moths or years, and the costs range from $600 to $1,000 a day, says the Brain Injury Association of America.
Please consider giving if at all possible and share this so more people can see...thanks a lot......Care for Cameron.
