Cesar and Almercris live in a rental home in Bario Haiti, a community in Puerto Plata.  Though the house looks decent at first glance, it floods whenever it rains, making life very difficult.

Almercris, 32, has walked a long and challenging road since age 15, when her parents divorced. In the pain and confusion that followed, she left home and faced many hardships and abuse. She became a mother at a young age, and her son is now 14.

In time, she met Cesar, 22 years her senior, who offered her kindness and stability. They married and together they had a daughter.  

Cesar is currently unemployed and actively looking for work.   He recently traveled to another province to work on a farm, but after six months of labor, he was never paid and returned home in worse condition. The family is now eight months behind on rent.

Today, Almercris faithfully serves as the Relief Society president (an organization for women in her church). She dedicates herself to lifting others even as she faces her own struggles.
