Candle Light High School Nakasajja hasn't added a story.
Our campaign team believe that all people deserve to be treated equally, with respect and be allowed to DREAM. we believe in helping those less fortunate and providing them with opportunities to make their dreams come true.
In Africa there are many girls who are from poor families, who will never have an education, are often abused, and are destined to produce babies and a life of toil and hardship. Those who are fortunate to be in school often miss school at time of menstruation due to lack of understanding of what is happening to their bodies and lack of sanitary pads and abuse and ridicule from the boys in their schools and their fathers at home. The Candle Light Foundation Uganda and the Candle Light High School provides an education for those who have been less fortunate, provides skill sets that will create opportunities after graduation, and provides menstrual hygiene management training to both girls and boys and sanitary pads for the girls; so girls stay in school, have a safe space, grow in confidence and grow in self esteem. The Candle Light High School provides the counselling and opportunities to help boys and girls achieve their DREAMS.
All money raised will go towards to expansion of the High School. More classrooms, more dormitories, larger dining room and kitchen, better restrooms and more space for the social enterprise. This in turn means that more Girls can be provided with opportunities in a safe space where gender equality is encouraged. At present the school has capacity for 140 students. The new building will be able to support 700 students and for many years to come. There will be a Phase 1 followed by a phase 2
“For $808, you can ensure that ten girls have a classroom in which to be educated for a year. For $81, you can ensure one girl has a safe classroom in which to learn”.
We are asking for your help. By supporting this campaign, YOU TOO CAN HELP MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE. Together we can make a difference for girls NOW and for generations of girls to come. Please support this campaign that will be beneficial for and change lives for so many.
The Campaign is initiated and spear headed by Rotarian Christopher Loat with support from team members :Rosette Nabuuma, Nancy Farran, Glenn Sigurdson, Kristrun Friðsemd Sveinsdottir, Sigga Baldursdottir, and Jack Robinson. NOW IT IS YOUR TURN TO SUPPORT OUR TEAM.
Please share the campaign on ALL YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS and your warm contact group. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
Candle Light High School is run by the Candle Light Foundation Uganda (CLF) a Not-for-Profit organisation. CLF's mission is to empower vulnerable girls to live their dreams and reach their full potential through education, skills training and entrepreneurship. We believe women are born with incredible gifts to share with the world and make our communities a better place. Our goal is to provide the tools, educational opportunities, support and encouragement to empower women and girls to become all that they dream to be. Many of the girls come from difficult backgrounds, poverty and have suffered abuse. We offer them a safe space and much needed counseling services. With the dedication of our volunteers, staff members, and partners, we strive to improve the lives of vulnerable women and girls.
The foundation has come a long way since being founded in 2001 by late Erla Halldorsdottir. We started in a backyard of another organisation, offering training on candle making for a few vulnerable girls and women. Today, CLF runs a high school on its own plot of land in Mukono district in Uganda and has different vocational programs to offer students including tailoring, hairdressing, catering and computer courses.
The Candle Light High School now also runs the Rotary Hygiene and Sanitation Social Enterprise Ltd. (RHSSEL) funded by a Rotary Global Grant. This is a not for profit enterprise within the school whose mandate is to provide training in menstrual hygiene management and to produce sanitary pads. The seamstresses for the production of the sanitary pads are recruited from girls who have recently graduated from the Candle Light High School. RHSSEL provides professional development for the teachers in the high school with a "Train the Trainer" program in menstrual hygiene management. The school, working with the Ministry of Education, then provides the training and makes sanitary pads available to the girls, initial in six schools in the Mukono District, and then expanding to schools in the Kampala area and eventually it is envision to schools across Uganda. The High School and RHSSEL will also be working closely with the cooperation between Rotary International and USAID (The Uganda Sanitation for Health Activity, USHA) on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programs presently happening in 21 districts in three cluster in Uganda.
One of the big problems for girls in Uganda and else where in Africa is that when they reach the age of menstruation they drop out of school each month due to the lack of menstrual products, the affordability of these products and a lack of understanding across gender.
The menstrual hygiene management training is given to both girls and boys to give a better understand to all on how a girls body develops, to encourage respect across genders, to create safe space for the girls in school and to empower the girls to develop self confidence and self esteem.
With the help of sister organizations, CLF Canada, CLF in
Iceland and CLF in Uganda, Candle Light High School also runs a
sponsorship program for girls coming from difficult situations and
who cannot afford to pay school fees.
As the current school building has reached its full capacity, we are reaching out to well wishers to support us and help raise funds for an additional building. This would allow us to add more classrooms and dormitories and to improve our school environment, expand our vocational programs and the social enterprise, expand the capacity of the social enterprise and most importantly, support many more girls in the community who would otherwise lack opportunities to study.
