The Tri-Centric Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which supports the work and legacy of American composer and musician Anthony Braxton. Our primary activities are preservation and dissemination of his scores, recordings, and writings, production of performances, and pedagogy.
Tri-Centric is currently working on digitizing Anthony Braxton’s archive which includes roughly 35,000 pieces of print material in the form of 400 scores and parts, as well as numerous writings, cassettes, videos and ephemera. An independent composer, Braxton has held on to these materials himself for his entire life, and his collection is only growing as he continues to compose at a prolific rate. We are on track to finish this work by June 2023.
We have recently completed the digitization of a large collection of audiovisual tapes and reels, now hosted at the Yale University Irving S. Gilmore Music Library, which will be available to view for free through the Yale Archives website by the end of this year. We are also excited to announce that our collaboration with Frog Peak Music has resulted in newly typeset versions of Volumes 1 and 2 of Braxton’s Tri-Axium writings. Once Volume 3 is complete, Frog Peak Music will release the full collection of writings to the public, with the downloadable version as pay-what-you-want so that every friendly experiencer in the world can read it.
In the last year we chose to forego publishing a new box set and organizing our yearly fundraising campaign so that we could focus our energy pushing forward on this archival work. Soon Tri-Centric will be able to focus more of its energy on the publishing of new works and documentation of pedagogy. We anticipate that Braxton’s new box set 10 Comp (Lorraine) 2022 will be released next year on New Braxton House. In the coming years we hope to increase the amount of material and information that is available for artists, researchers, and students of all levels who would like to learn how to perform these important works.

This CD features a brilliantly captured live recording of “Composition 429,” a new work that Braxton composed specifically for this duo, and the first piece using a new writing method that Braxton calls “Lorraine.” The composer’s notes to the piece describe Lorraine as “a music system that governs the ‘sonic winds’ of breath.” Saxophonist and longtime collaborator James Fei contributes an essay detailing the Lorraine system, which uses a combination of traditional notation and color-coded symbols of the composer’s design to indicate “specific sound types or performance techniques,” drawing from Braxton’s long history as an artist but always looking to the future of music.

This box set documents Braxton’s European tour in January 2020. Armed with a songbook of over one hundred tunes, Braxton crossed the Atlantic and assembled a stellar ensemble of British musicians – Alexander Hawkins on piano, Neil Charles on bass and Stephen Davis on drums. The box set comprises sixty-seven tracks culled from nine evenings of performances in London, Warsaw and Wels representing decades of American music, from the Great American songbook to Paul Simon via music by jazz luminaries including Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Andrew Hill, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, and many more.
