ROiL Inc dba Maine Inside Out hasn't added a story.
This March, in connection with the 23rd Annual Art Exhibition by Michigan Prisoners, artists and and activists from around the world will gather in Ann Arbor for an annual series of exhibits, workshops, panel discussions and events hosted by the University of Michigan's Prison Creative Arts Project. Maine Inside Out's youth performers have been invited to join as artists in residence for an entire week, and to perform the original play, "Love is Alternatives to Incarceration" as a featured part of the Exhibition.
Twelve Maine Inside Out members are committed to representing the powerful work being done here in Maine. They will lead workshops in UM classrooms throughout the week. They will visit arts programs in Michigan correctional facilities, speak on panels, and participate in collaborative work with visiting artists from all over the world.
Will you help us make it happen?
The Backstory:
In 1995, as a University of Michigan undergraduate, Maine Inside Out CoFounder and CoDirector Chiara Liberatore's eye was caught by a course listed as the "Henry Ford High School Project" taught by Professor Buzz Alexander. She spent that semester taking a look at mass incarceration in the United States through critical texts and classroom dialogue, and creating original theater in collaboration with young people incarcerated at a nearby juvenile correctional facility.
The experience she had that semester altered the course of her life, and helped guide her along the path that would lead her to dedicate her career to art for social change. In 2007, she arrived in Portland, Maine, where she joined forces with Margot Fine and Tessy Seward to create Maine Inside Out.
Over the years, Chiara has remained in close contact with the Prison Creative Arts Project. She has served on the board of this now 28 year old organization, and helps coordinate the activities of The PCAP Associates, an alumni network now some 300 members strong.
It's an honor and an amazing opportunity to return to the Michigan campus and share the work Maine Inside Out has accomplished, while also learning and growing alongside other artists working for social justice around the world.
This invitation comes with significant financial support from the University of Michigan. Maine Inside Out is now asking for your help in raising the remaining funds necessary to cover all expenses and make this residency a reality.
Let's send these artists and leaders on their way with the full force of their loving community behind them.
YOUR support will make the difference!
