Boussole Program Teachers hasn't added a story.
The Boussole Environmental Leadership Program is a 4-credit integrated education program at École secondaire Ronald-Marion, a publicly-funded French-language high school in Pickering, Ontario. The program is being launched in February 2018 and we have 18 motivated, eager and ambitious Grade 11 students signed up to participate. Students will be studying English, Chemistry, Geography and Leadership through an environmental lens and project-based learning.
The goals of the program are to:
- Develop a connection to the environment and an appreciation of its critical role in ensuring a functional and healthy society.
- Provide students with an educational experience that emphasizes environmental studies and science to better understand the importance of environmental sustainability in every discipline.
- Promote experiential and inquiry-based learning to bring the classroom to life.
- Help students be better prepared to make responsible decisions and be positive contributors to society.
To achieve these goals, we want to move the classroom into the environment. We would like to take two week-long trips:
- February 2018: 4 days at a winter chalet in Killbear Provincial Park. While trekking through the park on snowshoes, we'll learn about orienteering and the chemistry of snow. We'll discuss the role and importance of water to society through nightly documentary film screenings by the fireplace.
- June 2018: 5 days in Frontenac Provincial Park. With everything on our backs, we'll trek into the wilderness for 5 days of backcountry camping. We'll discuss the management of forests and analyze the chemistry of pristine lake water to compare it to urban watersheds. We'll learn the power of storytelling while sitting around a campfire and staring at the stars. For most students, this will be the first camping trip of their lives and an experience they'll never forget.
In the past year, we have received over $15000 in internal and external funding to purchase the equipment required for these trips. We have tents, backpacks, snowshoes, etc. Unfortunately, it is much more difficult to find funding to cover operating costs.
The estimated cost of both trips is $7500 (transportation, camping/chalet fees, food and materials). Our students have already raised approximately $2500 through the sale of environmentally-conscious products and a community trivia night. We are reaching out for your help in getting us to the $7500 we need!
