Jorge Bizarro hasn't added a story.
This is a story of unexpected tragedy, resilience, endeavour and overcoming. Lizangela is the eldest of 15 brothers and sisters, born and raised on the poorer Brazilian countryside and farming lands of Rio de Janeiro state at the foothills of the majestic scenery of the Serra dos Órgãos. She is now 45 years old, with a longstanding excellent professional cooker and maiden career, working for REGUA (a privately owned Conservation project and Reserve of Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). She is the mother of two daughters, a son and by now a happy granny with 3 grandchildren.
One year ago she was struck by unbearable leg pain (even morphine resistant) that proceed for a two month stay at the local town Hospital without a clear diagnosis. When she was finally removed for another health care Hospital in Rio and having arteriography exams completed, they came with a diagnosis and had to amputate both legs to save her life, because the situation was extremely advanced and the choice either her life or her legs.
Bilateral thrombosis of both legs is a very rare pathology, and
it usually has some genetic or metabolic cause. Doctors are still at
odds wondering and looking for the cause, but it is the second
similar medical case in the family.
However, she reacted very well and adapted quickly to the new situation, avoiding depression and with an extreme willingness to arrive to the best condition alloed by her new state, being able to move around in a wheel chair at the moment. She is currently attending physiotherapy in a special Hospital for Disabled people setup by a German NGO in Rio. She managed to fill a vacancy very quickly (in what is otherwise a long waiting queue) and became even an example of willingness to overcome for the other patients. Twice a week she has to cope with a trip to Rio, leaving home at 5 am for a two/three hour journey to reach the Hospital by 9:00 am. If she misses more than 3 appointments, she will lose her place.
She is under a relatively heavy and expensive load of medication, but is now nearing the stage where applying prosthetic prosthesis to both legs is the way to go. However she still needs the help of friends, family and knowledgeable people to raise enough money to pay for the weekly trips and medication for the months ahead.
Please help us raise money to help her get the new pair of legs she really deserves and medical support she needs and raise awareness of the rare condition in the rest of her family in what might turn out to be a hereditary syndrome!
