Half the Way Home hasn't added a story.
At four months old, Carrie Fisher has been through more hell than most people see in their lifetimes.
Named after the late actress, Carrie came to Half the Way Home from Clayton County Animal Control on December 29th, 2016. Upon intake at Animal Control, it was obvious that Carrie had a badly broken leg, but the cause of that break was not immediately clear. Friends of Clayton County Cats, a volunteer-based organization focused on getting cats adopted and rescued from Clayton County Animal Control, sent out an urgent plea for rescue, and Half the Way Home agreed to take little Carrie.
An initial vet exam determined that Carrie’s leg was so badly broken it could not be saved. During surgery prep to amputate the leg, the veterinarian discovered that Carrie had been impaled by a round, rod-shaped object. The wound extended from the kitten’s pelvis into her abdomen and could not have been caused by any means other than malicious intent. The vet now believes Carrie’s leg was broken in an attempt to escape her attackers.
Despite the horrible abuse she has suffered, Carrie has shown her rescuers nothing but love. She must have been in unimaginable pain when she arrived at Animal Control, but she has been all purrs for everyone. According to her foster, all Carrie ever wants is to be cuddled and loved on. It’s impossible to believe anyone would want to hurt such a loving creature, which makes this cruel act all the more heinous.
At this point, Carrie needs veterinary care, and Half the Way Home needs donations to pay for it. Carrie has had an initial surgery to repair her internal damage from the attack, but she will need another surgery to amputate her leg. She has had to stay at the vet and be under constant care, which adds even more expense to her bill. We held a fundraiser for Carrie's leg amputation before we knew the shocking details of her abuse, and every penny of that money has already gone towards Carrie's vet bills. We estimate that her initial care will cost Half the Way Home a little over $3,000 in addition to the money we have already raised.
At Half the Way Home, we NEVER base our decisions on the cost of taking on a case like Carrie’s. When we take on cases, our first and only question is, “Can we provide this cat with a good quality of life?” In Carrie’s case, the answer is a resounding YES! She will have an amazing life if she can survive this. She has proven that to us every single day while she has been in our care.
At this point, Carrie's prognosis will depend on how she heals from her initial surgery, how her amputation surgery goes, and how she heals from that second surgery. She has survived so much already, and we are hopeful—but we also recognize that Carrie has been through a life-threatening ordeal, and she is not out of the woods yet.
Please, donate to Carrie’s vet bills. Let’s show her that there is kindness and good in this world. Carrie would be happy to receive donations of any amount, and even $5 will help us to pay for her care.
Half the Way Home is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cat rescue which focuses on Georgia's forgotten cats, the cats who struggle to find rescue from Animal Control due to their condition, age, behavior, or expected cost. All donations for Carrie’s veterinary care are 100% tax deductible and will go towards paying her medical expenses. Any funds raised over what is necessary for Carrie’s care will go into Half the Way Home’s “Hot Mess Fund,” which covers the veterinary care for cats and kittens who, like Carrie, need intensive medical care to ensure their quality of life.
The proper authorities have opened an active investigation to catch the perpetrator or perpetrators of this cruel act. Half the Way Home is fully cooperating with the authorities. We all want the monster or monsters who did this held responsible.
